Show PRATT A BORN DIPLOMAT, WHOSE EVERY MOVEMENT STAMPS HIM AS LEADER Ing position that I have ever seen. He is among the best men in the handling of men that I have ever met. He knows how. He gets from the men who have confidence in him only their best. In short, he Is a diplomat. Pratt Is about 38 or 39 years old. In height he Is about 5 feet 10 inches. His hair is black with a touch of gray. With the exception of a mustache, his face is clean shaven. His chin and mouth are , firm, and show the determination of the man. Pratt is a strict temperance man; he neither smokes nor drinks. Either might Interfere with his business. I have seen him at 7 o'clock in the morning, after af-ter he has addressed a half dosen meet" lngs and attended a committee meeting until 8 o'clock of th. same morning, but his eyes were as bright, his speech as quick and his manner the same as though he had had all the eight hours' sleep that a man is supposed to require. Clean, ,cool. diplomatic, a man of remarkable re-markable ability, is C. O. Pratt. ' BY W. J. SLOAN. C. O. I ratt, chairman of the international interna-tional exscntive board of the Amalgamated Amalga-mated Asociation of; Street,. and Electric Elec-tric Bail' ray Employees: of America, is a diplomat and an organizer of more than ordinary ability. He Is cool under trying circumstances. He understands how to handle men and get from them the best that Is In them. He can talk Intelligently on a thousand subjects. He can turn a question without offense. He Is 1 iroad-minded and liberal In his views. He is willing to give and take. He will yield a point for the sake of peace an ; the Interests of the men whom he is. representing. He will work for peace, even when the men whom he is represent ng curse him for the way he is acting. Vet behind his apparent yielding and the criticism leveled at him there is grim determination and bulldog tenacity the sor which makes men successful. He may have failed at times, but never twice in the same place. He may have made mil takes, but they were lessons to him, and were not repeated. He may have fall ;d In many things, but at the age of tiirty-eight years he is a man with a mirk In life,-and that mark is not one that iny man need be ashamed of. Pratt l i one of the easiest and at the same tlms one of the hardest men to get an Interview with I have ever 'met. If he has u statement to make, he will make it 'reely and frankly to the news-gatherer news-gatherer who gets to him first. Nor does he give It as a "scoop." The next man who com si along may have the same In-formatior In-formatior . If he has no news to give out, you don't get If. And yet, when he declines o give out Information: he does It In suet a way that you cannot take offense. of-fense. He will turn your questions in such a gi aceful way, and "stand you off" with suet a nice little story that It is Impossible Im-possible to become angry. It has seen my pleasure to meet Pratt during t vo street oar troubles in Salt Lake City. My first meeting with him was whei he" first came here less than a year a ro to take care of the interests of the lo al street car men. During that trouble, which was settled without a strike, 1 met Pratt daily. During the trouble hich ended this morning. I have met hiir daily. I have heard him "cussed" by members of the union, who demanded in no uncertain terms that he call a strike. On one such occasion. In the latter part of last veek. Pratt was called almost everythlng but a gentleman by flv. excited ex-cited street car men. I wondered how he could stand for what was said to him, , yet he did. and when the men had exhausted ex-hausted ill the anathemas they could think of, Pratt replied: "Boys, keep cool; this Is not Pratt's fight, bui your fight. What I am doing I believe to be for your best interests." With s 'few more words he dismissed the five rien. and as they left him they had a Icok on their faces that showed that they were ashamed of what they had said to him. I have seen Pratt under other conditions condi-tions tha: would try the soul of any man. But never for a moment have 1 seen him excited. He Is the coolest man In a try-- try-- i |
