Show Parolees Deserve Better by Andrew Kish An item that should be brought to the attention of the public is the amount of money that is allocated to an inmate when he is released from the Utah State Prison. It is only $25.00; hardly enough money for any person to start a whole new life! It has been presented to the Legislature to increase this amount to a more substantial sum, however they voted that $25.00 was sufficient. What they based their opinions on is hard to imagine. The inmate is given a $25.00 clothing allowance prior to his release, and this is really a rather small amount to purchase the necessary clothing needed to get started in a new life. With the high cost of present day clothing, this amount will barely be enough to purchase a shirt, a pair of pants, and a set or two of underclothing. After the inmate has reached his parole date and is attired in his newly purchased clothes, he is given the $25.00 and told to stay out of prison. How far is he supposed to go on this amount, how long is this amount of money supposed to last? Even if the inmate being paroled has a job lined up, it will be a week or two before he receives his first paycheck. How is this inidividual supposed to live for a week or two on $25.00 and one set of clothing. When society denies an increase in the amount of money for parolees, they are being told to steal the money they need for survival. The inmate is paid a very low wage while incarcerated, anywhere from $1 .50 to $37.00 a month, with the majority of the inmate receiving about $7.00 per month. He is expected to budget this money and save a portion of it for when he is released. population only The Weekly Crossword Pu2zle across 1. MORE THAN WARM 2. MEXICAN COIN 8. PORTICO 12. And, he is also supposed to purchase all the necessary items he needs while incarcerated such as shaving equipment, soap, cigarettes, etc. Subsequently, the incarcerated inmate learns how to manipulate and scheme to make his money stretch from payday to payday. Hardly good behavior traits to learn! The inmate is supposed to be rehabilitated when he becomes eligible for a parole, but he is given only $25.00 and told to survive in the free world. Giving the inmate more money when he is paroled will help reduce the recidivism rate. The down majority of parole violators are crime because they needed the money, for a variety of reasons, but basically they are all involved in a related to survival. Also, a large majority of the parole violators are returned to prison wihin six months of being paroled because they had nothing to start all over with. Something has to be done to increase the amount of money the parolee is presently receiving. This would give the parolee a decent chance and save society more trouble and expense. |
