Show potash producing company getting ready for operation by BV E M ALLISON JR the liberty potash company which was incorporated recently under the laws of utah is financed entirely by utah and wyoming capital it is the result of a genuine effort upon the part of certain residents of those two states to produce potash for fertilizing til izing and other purposes for the market in this country for which there is a great and urgent demand it is well known by those who are familiar with the subject that before the war very large quantities of the potash consumed in this country were im ported from germany where it can be produced at small cost during buring the war however from necessity the german prod producers acers were unable to export any potash f from rom lack of shipping facilities and because of the effectiveness of the allied blockade of german ports there never has been enough potash produced in this country from all available sources to supply the home de mand and in co conse nse t t quence of the failure of the german supply due to the causes just jus t stated there resulted realized that an abundant supply of potash bearing rock of suitable grade and of favorable occurrence with regard to quarrying transportation supplies of reagents and fuel is one of the first important conditions which must exist in any potash producing enterprise based on the treatment of silicates which it is proposed to io establish on a broad permanent and practicable basis after systematic search and exploration they succeeded in finding large deposits of the min eral known as wyomingite in the portion to its percentage of potash than ordinary feldspar and it therefore requires a less of reagents for the extraction of its potash content than feldspar or other similar rocks while it is properly classed as a hard abrasive rock its occurrence as a lava enables it to be readily crushed and pulverized the land acquired fro from m the railroad company alone aggregates 2030 acres and the deposit of the wyomingite therein is estimated by the U S geological survey to range from fifty 4 ak steam shovel excavating at the building site liberty potash company a great scarcity in the supply aply of this most important element in the fhe agricultural and industrial life of the country amounting alino almost st to a camine the search for potash deposits appreciating all this and realizing the necessity and importance of supplying the home demand with a home product so that the money of the domestic consumers would not t flow abroad to foreign producers even after ter the cessation of hostilities mr T W soyer and mr guy sterling the latter a prominent mining and civil engineer both of t salt lake city more than a year ago began gan a thorough investigation having in view the ascertainment of the existence of any y valuable mineral deposits containing potash in commercial quantities they hills of wyoming forming immense beds near superior in sweetwater sweet water county in that state contained in lands belonging to the government as well as in other lands belonging to the union pacific railroad company it is these beds of potash bearing rock which they have after considerable effort acquired the right to mine and which have been demonstrated by careful analyses to contain large percentages of potash character of wyomingite wyomingite is a potassium aluminum silicate it occurs as a lava and as a silicate is in a class by itself it is an intimate mixture of several potash bearing silicates including feldspar and other ingredients it contains much less silica in pro five feet in thic thickness knes on the basis of fifty feet in thickness these 2030 acres contain tons of wy amin gite this tonnage is very materially increased by the deposits in the lands derived from the government both by lease and by right of location the average potash content of all these rocks has been een proven to be over 10 per cent the sterling process it was vitally necessary of course to originate some method or process by which the potash could be successfully cess fully extracted in soluble form from these potash bearing silicate rocks and this has been done through the ingenuity of mr sterling who had for several years given the subject careful investigation vesti gation several years ago he began a systematic series of tests of the methods previously developed in order to determine what combinations of reagents heat application etc would liberate the potash from the silicate most effectively ane practicability and economy of the process on a commercial basis being the chief features considered si as the essential chemical part of the process had been fully determined previous ly his repeated corroborative tests applied to the wyomingite deposits above referred to proved entirely satisfactory whereupon he took up the commercial and financial features of the matter with mr boyer and the result has been the organization of this company on a sound financial basis processes have been patented mr air processes have received the recognition of the government in the form of patents and other applications for additional patents covering improvements in these processes are now pending in order I 1 to demonstrate the success of these patented methods of potash extraction mr boyer and mr air sterling sterlin caused to be erected in salt lake city a thoroughly well equipped demonstration or experimental plant containing all the necessary machinery and this plant has been in operation for more than a year making frequent runs under the direction of mr sterling sterlin and subject to the observation of many other trained experts all of whom have pronounced his method of extracting tr potash from the rock as being a complete success frequent treatments of potash and limestone deposits as well as to the wyoming coal fields arom which a substantial supply of coal for fuel can be economically obtained there lands wei e acquired amounting amo to 1080 acres on the westerly side of green river and within less than than a mile of the town on which to erect the main plant construction of a spur track of considerable length is now about completed by the utah construction Construct lon company extending from the union pacific railroad to the site of the plant under a contract with the federal director general of railroads and with his full indorsement endorsement indor and approval from superior the shipping point of the wyomingite the distance to green river by railroad is forty seven miles from the limestone deposits near sage wyoming the distance to green river is ninety miles at rock springs fifteen miles from green river and at kemmerer seventy miles distant fuel for kiln heating and power purposes will be obtained fv bvm T 4 T MAO awag completing the new dining hall liberty potash company the crude material in this plant in continuous operations of from twenty four to forty eight hours each completely demonstrated that the process effectively liberated and saved the potash contained in the wyomingite in a simple direct and economical manner in order to carry on the operations on any large scale it is necessary to use large quantities of limestone and to have an adequate supply of limestone mr boyer and mr sterling acquired large beds of that ingredient near sage in lincoln county wyoming the main reduction plant in considering the question of the location of the main reduction plant where the operations would be carried on and the potash produced green river wyoming was selected because of its accessibility to the government examination and approval this was all done during the period of the war and in order to show the importance and necessity of the enterprise to the government and its people expert representatives of the united states st ates geological survey and the general land office were invited to make a study of all of its phases which which they promptly did carefully and thoroughly investigating it in all of its aspects and witnessing frequent runs at the demonstration plant based upon their favorable reports to the proper government departments the war industries board authorized the filling of priority orders for all the necessary machinery for the green river plant and practically all of the machinery is now on the ground where the plant is 1 s being rapidly rushed to completion As illustrating the deserved importance of the potash industry to the people of this h country and the necessity of having a domes domela tic supply sufficient to satisfy our home con coil mr B M baruch chairman of the war industries board caused to be publish ed in the official U S bulletin of november 29 1918 an extended statement bearing on the importance of this industry he begins his statement by reciting that at t the h e d cireo j re V tion of the president the chemical division of the war industries board has turned over to the department of the interior the problem of increasing the potash production oi the united states he then adds that this action was taken in order that an all established branch of the government may permanently manent ly set itself to the task of emancipating the american farmers from the grip ot germanys germanas Germ anys monopoly on the worlds supply of fertilizer material before the signing of the armistice the war industries board had already attacked the problem chaiman baruch himself had appeared before a congressional committee in behalf of an amendment to the revenue bill which would give encouragement to private industries who would undertake the risk of establishing potash production in this country statement of mr baruth it is not deemed necessary to quote extensively exten ten from the statement of mr air baruch but the following extract will illustrate how important this industry is regarded by the government and its representatives prior to the outbreak of the war germany by reason of her monopoly m of the potash supply had gradually extended her arm around the food crops of the th e world it was to germany that imported m into the united states about tons of potash contained in tons of crude and refined salts of the value of many millions of dollars and the importance of increasing the production of potash in this country is also apparent from the further fact stated by george otis smith director of the united states geological survey that the production of potash in this country in 1917 was about tons being only 14 per cent of the normal consumption of the country there has therefore been a very material shortage in the desirable and actually needed supply of potash during the war and such shortage even exists now this shortage the liberty potash company earnestly hopes to supply ply at least in part during the coming year of 1919 and continually shereaf thereafter ter the uses of it is well known that potash is put to many diversified uses in agriculture as a fertilizer and in the manufacture of the higher grades of glasses of explosives of all forms of liquid soaps as well as in dyeing and is also used extensively for medicinal purposes it is an absolute essential to plant life because the growing of crops exhausts the potash in the soil very rapidly if the industry is stimulated by
