Show THE WORKED OUT MINE evidence accumulates from year to year that a mine is seldom entirely worked out even though pronounced so by the best engineers procurable engineers are merely human and the best they can do is to state their judgment as founded upon the findings of geologists and other engineers who have preceded them and upon the experience of the practical mining man monarch hill in chaffee county colorado rises to a height of about 1600 feet above the old mining camp of monarch years ago so long that the present generation of miners has practically forgotten it the high grade gold and silver ores from the mines on the hill were the talk and wonder of the mining world but at a depth of 1800 feet and just above the permanent water level level a barren zone was entered by the shafts some exploration work was done but in a halfhearted half hearted wry v y as it was generally conceded that the ore was all above that level and when the ore in sight had been exhausted work was stopped a large part of the machinery removed and the old camp took its place among the ghost cities of the mountains A among mong the famous properties of the district was the madonna mine with a production record of over late in the year just passed lessees lessels decided to take a chance on the old producer and proceeded to sink through the barren zone to the water level the contact vein continued strong though with no values until the shaft had been sunk another seventy feet here the water level was reached and ore commenced making at once now the entire vein is a high grade product varying from seven to thirty feet in width and carrying average values around per ton mainly silver A well known engineer of salida calida colorado clyde H jay has sampled the showing and his statement regarding the rich streak in the center of the vein is particularly ticul arly interesting this picture book he states shows a thickness varying from six to eighteen inches and the halfton half ton assay sample taken by mr jay gave returns of ounces silver and 1108 ounces gold giving a value of to the ton the contact vein extends entirely across monarch hill and both owners and leasers leaders on other properties are now working with feverish haste to get through the barren zone and into the values below the water level there is little doubt that other treasure vaults will be opened in the district in the near future there is also talk of a deep drain tunnel from garfield about a mile and a half to the east of monarch mines seem to differ from prize fighters and wrestlers wrest lers in their ability to come back after being apparently down and out examples like the one here cited not only show the futility of prophesying the end of any mining proposition of merit but they also speak a good work for the leasing system the lessee who takes a chance on a problem of this kind and makes good is certainly deserving of the good fortune that comes ills his way |
