Show MINING legislation at it becomes become s more and more apparent every day that mining is the backbone of utah s industrial du and financial fabric and that to this industry very largely the state must look for future greatness and prosperity this fact is admitted by every t thinking man by everyone who has given criven the subject any thought 11 whatever but for our mines which daily send out their metallic treasures for the up bui building ldina of our commonwealth utah today would be but little more than a thinly settled agricultural ao and stock raising section of this intermountain rel region gion and salt lake would be but a way station on the trunk lines connecting the great east with the still greater west every year adds to the importance of the minine industry of the state more and more capital is being invested in our mines and prospects in mills and reduction works in mine and mill machinery in provisions and supplies and the number ot of men employed is being steadily increased and yet strange to say but very little legislation 11 calculated to benefit mining 11 and to protect the mining 11 operator has ever been enacted by bv our state legislature there are many phases of the mining 11 industry that mi might k ht be stimulated and protected if the state legislature were to give I 1 more attention to the wants and necessities of this greatest of all industries laws might be placed on our statute books giving greater protection to the prospector and claim holder while more stringent rules should prevail regarding the claim hog 1100 11 to say nothing of needed legislation pertaining to the timbering 1 of mines the handling 1 of ho hoisting istina I 1 works in the raising or lowering of men the construction and maintenance of man ways protection or guard rails at station levels the compilation of maps showing mine workings and a hundred or more other features and factors associated with safe and successful mine operation for one thing the office of commissioner of mines should be established the incumbent of which should be empowered to formulate certain rules governing ino mining I 1 operations one of his duties being r to see that such rules and regulations shall be respected and obeyed in the state legislature soon to convene many of the members come from our mining camps these being versed in the needs of those engaged in the mining 0 industry of the country should take the initiative in the effort to pass wholesome laws go governing the mining industry |
