Show THE BOSTON consolidated ina in a recent issue of the engineering M mining ining journal of new york there appeared a li bellous and uncalled for article concerning the property of the boston consolidated mining company which is located on the great copper belt of bingham if the criticisms had been founded on actual facts no exceptions could have justly been taken against the journal for their utterance however the article in question in all probability would never have been written and published had the editor of this publication been duly informed as to the facts in the case the impression prevailing that he has been imposed upon by an individual or individuals who never see any good thing in properties owned by their neighbors at any rate the article has stirred up a hornets nest in utah and the journal has doubtless become aware of this fact ere this as several answers have been made denying its assertions among the number who have sent in more or less indignant protests against the outrage being hartwig A cohen the widely known mining expert and operator who for years has been connected with captain J R delamar in several gigantic and successful mining enterprises in this western countr country 7 the following 11 letter to the journal being written by mr cohen on june ast 1st viz with reference to your article concerning the boston consolidated mine I 1 beg to state that you do this property a great injustice and evidently without a thorough and careful investigation have jumped at conclusions to explain what I 1 mean you state because the anaconda 4 percent per cent ore pays its profits mainly out of the gold and silver contents and that the 2 per cent copper ore of bingham cannot pay under the existing conditions in utah buti but I 1 have made some bingham ores pay the boston consolidated property has not been examined by me and I 1 do not know its average value but if they have a vast amount of 2 per cent material they can and will make it pay largely one year ago I 1 examined a property which adjoins the boston consolidated in this property I 1 found a very extensive body of material which averaged per cent copper I 1 concentrated this material sold the concentrates in the market for 7 I 1 cents per pound for the copper contents and paid 9 per per ton working charge receiving net for these concentrates an amount equalling per ton of ore mined and milled I 1 can mine quarry and concentrate this material for at most 69 cents per ton leaving a net profit of per ton with copper at 1 7 cents per pound the mining and metallurgy of this material is quite different and much less expensive than that of the anaconda ore my concentration tests were crude as I 1 had insufficient machinery the test being made only to determine commercial possibilities I 1 learned that much better results were obtained than when the boston consolidated tests were made while I 1 do not at thi this s time attempt to state the amount of material there is of this character in sight my investigations extended over an area of 2000 feet in width by a like distance in length and a varying depth of from 50 to feet the character of the deposit being everywhere such as to suggest a general distribution of values throughout the entire mass 1 I am in no manner interested in the boston consolidated property but my investigations of the prop hyry belt of bingham convinces me that it presents a basis for a vastly important and valuable industry to which you will agree upon investigation yours very truly HARTWIG A COHEN |
