Show M of BB 1 S THE CHLORIDE POINT MINE OF LION HILL j Z l f l ORE than one miner in this intermountain region has been rewarded in his search for the precious metals the resplendent gold and the soft glowing silver the t e two royal substances upon which is based the currency of the world al As a matter of fact such instances are not isolated cases the reverse being the general rule as is shown by tle the mint reports and the history of many millionaire mining kings king s who owe their gratifying financial fidanc i a 1 standing to their successes in mining operations erat ions in utah as well as in other mining states in this western country it was not until seven or eight years ago that utah was regarded as a gold producing section and at that time it was able to boast of only one gold camp mercur but now dow the state can p point I 1 t I 1 with pride to half hal f a dozen gold districts at commonwealth so far as the search for auriferous bearing ores was concerned and when it was found that low grade silver ores carrying a few dollars to the ton could also be handled economically and at a handsome profit by the utilization of the cyanide process of reduction there was greater activity than ever before in the search for and acquisition of mines of this character and no surprise was expressed in mining circles in this city therefore when a company was organized and incorporated on the chloride point group on lion hill three miles north of the prosperous and of this section produced thousands upon thousands of dollars in the precious metals at this time only the very richest ores were mined and marketed the low grade mineral being left standing for two reasons one being that they would not pay expenses to ship and the other being that no process was then known whereby they could be milled at a profit among these old producers the chloride point is prominently mentioned this mine was known of twenty five years ago and as its name would indicate was a producer of chloride ores some of 11 jf 62 V M A 2 F least all of which give promise of wonderful things at no distant day the discovery of mercur and of a process for the successful treatment of the mammoth bodies of low grade ores for which this locality is now so justly noted proved to be a great ulous to the mining industry of our THE CHLORIDE POINT MINE AND MILL progressive camp of mercur lion hill in the early days when mining history was still in its infancy was regarded as being one of the richest mining sections in the state or in the west for that matter and it is well known that the mines which were exceedingly high in grade the operators following up the rich streaks and pockets of this character leaving intact and unbroken bodies of low grade grad e mineral which could not be mined or handled to advantage hardly more than three years ago when the chloride point company took hold of t this h i s old producer the previous output of which is placed in the nelo neighborhood of its m main ain wor workings kings consisted of a crooked winding the vein into the hill a distance of TOO feet while at the mouth of the tunnel the only improvements were a little log cabin or bunk house and a blacksmith shop within this ON PAGE EIGHTH EIGHT I 1 THE CHLORIDE POINT MINE OF LION HILL CONTINUED FROM PAGE FIVE brief period however a wonderful transformation has taken place and now theline emine th can boast of more than 2200 feet of tunnels drifts cross cuts dinzes and upraises up raises the gold and silver to the ton while the rich ore oe occurring furring in pipes stringers e which there are stringers I 1 and sometimes large pockets of high grade showing metallic values ranging from to ounces silver and from 3 to 6 gold to the ton CHLORIDE POINT CYANIDE product PRODUCT old tunnel which has been straightened out has penetrated the mountain a distance of 1200 feet and the mining review is informed that there are now ten faces of good milling ore exposed in the workings of the property which are now scientifically worked most of the ore intended for the mill way through chutes from the upper workings to the ore oars cars in the main tunnel opening and in addition to the improvements made in the mine a fine ton mill embellishes the property almost at the mouth of the tunnel operations in both mine and mill being automatic and by gravity as far as pos possible sibie so that operating expenses have been reduced to the minimum the property of the company embraces eleven lode claims or an area of acres covering a portion of the richest mineralized section of f lion hill while in silverado canyon just below included in the group it has a water right or of ten acres cronl from which a 1 large arge portion of the water utilized in ore reduction is obtained the formation of this side of lion hill is lime stone slightly tilted and more or less fractured or broken the stratification dipping into the hill or mountain at an angle of about 25 degrees the strike of the vein which is described as a lime contact being northerly and southerly the vein matter being an altered lime chloride and horn silver ores carrying paying values in gold the average of the milling ore according to mill run tests being 13 in the companas comp anys line fine mill an illustration of which accompanies this article is now treating about thirty tons of crude ore daily at a saving of practically all of the gold g old and silver extraction co limite dand by the chemist in charge superintendent M D stackpole who is now using one pound of cyanide in the reduction of a ton of ore where heretofore seven pounds were used which means a saving alone in this chemical of to 3 a ton which in itself means much when the pushed to its f ull full capacity which will doubtless be done within the next three months while some idea of the profits acaru accruing can be gained when the statement is made that the cost of extraction has been reduced to 25 cents an ounce for silver exclusive of the cost of mining and this cost coat on account of the ease of bf mining on account odthe of the large bodies exposed and th tha fact that but little timbering is necessary is comparatively light the mill is operated by electricity furnished by the telluride power plant and the plant is heated by steam so that operations can be carried on successfully from one end of the year to the other the company in its ita mine and mill is giving ing employment to a force of about ve men the mine is in excellent shape p physically while its plant is up to date and equipped with i modern machinery of the best makes in fact the mine is beginning to show the results of the steadfast policy of the company which has been to develop the property in a i most thorough and systematic manner rather than to make a record from the start as a dividend payer industry and mining a newsy and able mining paper published at seattle wash has been purchased by captain J T thompson who proposes to make many improvements in this sprightly publication the mining review extends the fraternal hand Z 4 ap ORE IN THE CHLORIDE POINT MINE 75 per cent of its silver contents the success of
