measures is receiving more favorable attention at the hands of oil men and investors than is the country around fossil in uinta county wyoming and this interest hat been greatly intensified of late because of the successes which have recently crowned the efforts of the utah wyoming oil and fuel company of this city in which a great many of our home people are largely interested this company owns between 1200 and 1300 acres of choice oil land on twin creek and the intermountain oil company the fossil von con and the wyoming company having rigs on the ground and at work while the intermountain will soon begin operations on a large scale the two former having already struck oil the fossil con having a pumping well of twenty five barrels daily capacity at feet while the wyoming at feet has a flowing well of about the same daily output with the energy that is of the management of the utah wyoming oil company compan y excellent results have been obtained in drilling operations within a comparatively short time on the tenth of january of the present year the company began the sinking of its well and by the of february had reached a depth of feet at which point it a fine body of oil bearing sand was encountered the indications being that it will not be very long now before oil in paying quantities will be found about the first of the year the company purchased a fine no I 1 standard rip rig of the herron co los angeles gala cala the plant having a sinking capacity of feet included in its equipment being a derrick 75 feet in height with a base of 20 feet a 26 foot walking beam inches modern aepli ances for putting in and pulling out casing in the heart of fossil oil fields the holdings w of the association being environed by the fent possessions of the fossil consolidated oil company 4 I 1 wn C jav the wyoming oil company N d OIL WELL AND RIG OF THE UTAH WYOMING OIL CO two ton hydraulic jacks together with high pressure pumps 30 horsepower boiler and a 15 horsepower engine a 50 ton steel crane and two 0 strings of fine drilling tools in addition to this equipment the company has built and furnished a boarding house feet in its dimensions an engine and boiler house feet stables outhouses out houses bouses etc so that everything is at hand for efficient and economical operation As already stated the company began sinking on the of january beginning with a fifteen inch hole bole and the log of operations is one that will be read with much interest and satisfaction by those familiar with oil drilling operations and who have faith in the th e ultimate success of this enterprise for the first fifty feet the bit penetrated a strata of clay before teaching reaching solid formation at sixty feet a four foot strata of sand was struck carrying a goodly quantity of oil from the fifty foot level down to the level with the exception of the sand strata just mentioned the formation consisted of a blue shale at tb this is point water was struck and also another sand strata carrying more oil than that above then came about twenty feet more of the clay followed by feet of blue shale at feet gas was greatly in evidence and at feet a third oil bearing sand strata was encountered carrying still more oil which dripped from the drill from the to the the drill was in blue shale much harder in its texture than that above at the below the blue shale the fourth strata of oil bearing sand was reached the drill penetrating this strata for four or five feet without getting fretting below it when drilling operations were suspended in order to put down the casing in this strata an artesian flow of oil water gas and sand was encountered and in putting in in new casing the flow followed the piping into the air to an elevation of twenty four feet the above describes the condition of the well on the of february last when the company ordered an oil pump from california which is now on the field and in operation the intention being to pump the well dry if pos sible with the expectation that a flow of oil will follow in the meantime the company lias has ordered 2000 feet of extra heavy drive p pipe ape and in case the oil flow is not sufficient and satisfactory at the present depth the management will continue on down to a depth of 2000 feet or more if necessary with every reason to believe that more abre extensive and i more prolific oil bearing stratas will be encountered this belief being based upon the opinion of eminent oil experts and geologists who have made a careful and exhaustive study of the fossil oil fields and who predict to a certainty the eki existence stence of oil in almost inexhaustible quantity in this favored locality the oil from the utah wyoming byomin g com banys property is of excellent quality and from exhaustive tests and analysis made is shown to contain 45 per cent lubricating oil 22 per cent gasoline and 17 per cent illuminating oil with a base the product being valued at 5 a barrel at the well the companas comp anys well has an elevation of feet above the oregon short line railroad track which is two and a half miles distant and the oil can be conveyed to the cars on the line by gravity pipeline which can be put in at a comparatively small expense and within a brief period when necessary the property of the company is easily ac tessible ces sible being but a short distance from the old town of fossil while new fossil is located only a mile and a quarter from the companas comp anys holdings 9 railway facilities are convenient and but little trouble is
