Show the redwing of bingham Bing KaLm and its reorganization organization re I 1 W heraver one may go where mining w topics are discussed and where people are in anyway interested in the mining in austry which which is the chief and most staple staple of all occupations he will hear words of praise and endorsement of the great mines of bing ham one of the oldest as well as one of the 1 area greatest test mining minina camps of this intermountain region in boston new y york ork and other com mercial centers of the east bingham and its mines are as well known and as popular as is cripple creek with its bonanzas or is butte the great areat montana copper campy camp and for the reason ti that litt in no DO other section inthe in the west are there to be found greater bodies of ore pro of k gold silver lead and copper As a matter of fact the future outlook for bingham is all that could be desired and this because of the magnitude of the ore deposits of this wonderfully der fully prolific fid camo the great number of its producers and its accessibility lity to say nothing of K f the past from mere surface workings it was deft efti to the mining men of the present day to show chow to the world that in reality but a small portion of the metallic wealth of the district district hash has been touched hed deep mining during re cent years and extensive operations disclosing the face that with depth the ore bodies of A 4 4 7 4 L t 6 I 1 ai iaz flashlight IN THE JUMBO IN THE REDWING the fact that more blo big 11 mining companies and capitalists are now making more investments in this section than ever before in its history although bingham I 1 is one of the veteran camps of the west it is really only within the last few years that tha t mining men have realized its wonderful possibilities in the way of mineral pr production producing its millions in th the e district increase in size and value while certain portions of the camp hitherto regarded as barren have been proven to possess merit and value of such a nature as to make them rivals and even pee peers rs of long lona 11 established p producers reducers cers and dividend payers from the old bonanzas of the highlands down to the old Winn amuck near the mouth of bingham canyon every foot of ground is 9 now held and jealously guarded and the same i can be said of carr fork from its junction n with bingham canyon to the high stretches above the great highland boy while more attention than ever before is now paid to markham gulch and the virgin but rich producers which dot its sloping sides aides from bing ham to near its head the mines of this gulch being productive of the richest ore yet found in the camp giving every evid evidence nee of great things in the future with intelligent t tell e I 1 ai igent g e n t exploitation and more extensive development among t the h e most promising promising 0 of these is the redwing mine a producer of excellent promise that is located almost at the mouth of the gulch and in the very heart of one of the richest portions of the camp its near ne neighbors lo 10 ghiors such as the julia D dean e a n t the he montezuma and 0 other t h e r mines having made sensational sat ional records in the past in the production of ore the value of which was estimated in pounds instead of in tons like all other mining properties in this western country no matter how pro promising 1 and meritorious the redwing has had its ups and downs altho although ugh g the future of this bonanza is now more promising than ever before before the proper property ty passed into the hands bands of the R redwing edwin 1 company it made 1 more t than han one small fortune for men working it in a desultory way and since it formed the basis I 1 for an incorporation it has been productive of much good ore and has been improved by intelligent development so that now it is of more value than ever before in its history the belief being general that but for un forseen hindrances and obstacles the property would today be listed as a heavy producer and dividend payer when the redwing redoing mining company began operations in august 1897 its possessions were limited to only one claim and this the redwing which gave to the organization its present name later on however its holdings ings were materially increased by the addition of ten valuable adjoining claims and fractions included in the list being t the famous old morris property which it is learned produced something like in the precious metals in the early history of its development and operation the company upon the acquiring of such a large area of splendid territory began at once the dyste Z k A I 1 W az 0 43 P 0 A ORE AT THE REDWING matic development of the property no 2 tunnel was pushed further into the mountain with the result that it was not long before a mammoth body of low grade milling ore was wa uncovered the vein being streaked with stratas of exceptionably rich mineral this chute is now known as the jumbo and some idea of its dimensions can be derived by a glance at the half halftone tone illustration of these workings which accompanies this article the jumbo when last seen by the editor of the mining review had produced a great many tons of ore which were treated by the redwing concentration works at the mouth of markham gulch but two or three hundred yards from the mine the being in y forty feet in sixty feet in width and sixty feet in length on the strike of the vein the ore carrying an excess in iron and milling four tons into one thus making a marketable and profitable product the crude ore marketed by the company averaging in the neighborhood of 30 to 50 per cent lead from 8 to 25 ounces silver and 1 in gold to the ton the redwing group presents a perfect network of veins three of which paralleling eling each other the columbia the silver hill and the hosford will be cut by no 3 crosscut tunnel at depths varying from to 80 feet vertically in the development of these three mineral zones but little work has been done other than surface scratching but this surface prospecting has developed the fact that they are strong and well mineralized with evary every indication of depth and permanency in the upper workings known as tunnel no 1 but little work has been done by the company notwithstanding the fact that i in n these openings there is a splendid showing of ore the operations of the company being very largely directed to acquiring depth and the blocking out of ore bodies rather than the extraction of ore at or near the grassroots grass roots in tunnel no 2 however much has been ac complis hed by the company upraises up raises and dinzes from this level holding out most encouraging cou raging inducements for more extended development chief of which might be mentioned the uncovering of the jumbo already alluded to no 2 tunnel being beina t connected with the wagon M road below by a s shoot hoot feet in length as is shown in the photograph reproduced in this article within the limits of a brief write would be impossible to give the history bistor in in detail of the redwing company in the fall of 1899 the affairs of the association were in a most promising condition having acquired what was afterwards known as the redwing mill preparations were made for ore production on a large seal scale e an and d the th el indications nd j were that within a reasonable period from the sale of ore and concentrates concentrate sf principally the latter the company would be able to pay off the indebtedness incurred in the purchase of additional territory that extensive devel I 1 might M be continued and that a sur plus remain that would be sufficient to begin and maintain the payment of regular dividends As a matter of fact these hoped for results seemed almost within sight when in august 1900 the ton mill was wasa destroyed by fire thus rendering it impossible for the company to handle its milling ores with this source of revenue cut offard off and with a non assessable stock it was not possible to raise the necessary funds for the placing of the property upon a profitable basis the management finding itself thus handicapped for the want of funds and being without sufficient means of raising money has been working at a disadvantage hoping to uncover enough high grade ore with which to meet n necessary ece 8 sary requirements some portions of the mine have been leased from time to time and on its own account the company has done a limited amount of development work from the proceeds of the sale of treasury stock but it takes money to develop a mine and without these sinews of war the task has been an exceedingly difficult one to overcome this difficulty and at the same time place the affairs of the company on a sound solid and solvent basis so that active and successful operation might begin at an early day the new Redwin redwing cr company has recently been ancor incorporated borated po rated which will take over the affairs and holdings of the old organization and thus clear the way for the energetic carrying on of plans carefully formulated and considered in the future working of this valuable property to us the plan of the new redwing mining ing company seems equitable and just the capitalization of the new organization is placed at shares of a par value of 1 each enough of this will be used to absorb the ad old redwing redwing stock trading share for share the remainder will be left in the treasury of the new company for the uses and purposes of the same thus giving an immediate in source of revenue and it is hoped by the mana management 9 ement that the proceeds received from the sale of treasury stock will be sufficient for all needs and that although the stock of the new company is assessable it will not be necessary to resort to this method of raising funds for the further operation and equipment of the mine the officials of the company claim that they have never had bad a fair chance to tb prove what they could do in the development and exploitation of the redena redwing mine as they have never been in a position to work it in a manner indicated by their best judgment but under the present organization obstacles heretofore retarding the carrying out of their policy and line of proposed operation will be removed and eliminated and the indications are that the redwing will be vigorously pushed to the front from now on until the mine is added to splendid list of dividend payers it would seem to the review that it would be wisdom on the part of the company to proceed with development work until the la large rge ore bodies known to exist within the the boundary lines of the group are blocked out in sufficient quantities to warrant the thorough and up to date equipment of the mine in the way of mil milling linc and transportation facilities with this done there is every reason to believe that the redwing will in time take rank as one of the large ta and permanent producers of the camp although the company has been handi capped for money so that it has been compelled to do but very little development work and it is a significant M fact that the amount 0 of f ore shipped during the past few years has been largely done by leaders leasers lea sers sors it may be of interest to review readers to know that during durina the past two years the mine has produced ore to the value of at least if the company could have had the means with which to have taken out this ore and had been enabled to handle if with proper and necessary equipment it looks reasonable to assume that a large amount if bot all of the indebtedness of the association would long iong abo ago have been liquidated As it is the review is pleased to note that the organization 0 and incorporation of the new redwing redwind I 1 company will enable the management 11 to proceed with the operation of its property without let or hindrance from this
