Show THE WINTER QUARTERS MINES T the he winter quarters mines in winter quarters canyon a mile and a half above schofield presented a scene of wonderful activity tivit when visited by a representative of the review the first of the present month at this point the pleasant valley coal company has three coal mines designated as nos 1 5 and 4 nus nos 1 and 4 are producing while no 5 is being opened so as to be listed with the other producers owned and operated by the company no 1 has a recorded output of about 1200 tons of excellent coal daily while no 4 is producing in the neighborhood of tons every twenty four hours the company having men on its payroll and disbursing in the near neighborhood of in wages monthly in no 1 niffie mine the main entry is feet in length with a parallel entry of equal length which is used as a return airway air way in addition to which there are many miles of cross entries levels and rooms the vein of coal in this mine ranges from ten to fourteen feet in in thickness being larger east of the main entry than it is to the west no I 1 mine was first worked twenty two years ago but was not vigorously operated until five or six years ago since gince which time the average yearly output of coal has been about tons in the interior operation of the mine two electric hoists and one electric locomotive are employed the electric hoists dropping the loaded cars down the main slope to thelridge the bridge or tipple thirty horses are used in hauling the loaded cars from the different rooms to the side entries the main entry is practically level from the head of what is ia called the rock tunnel which is 1500 feet in from the mouth of the entry to the head of rock tunnel being six degrees of an upraise or pitch the dip of the vein is seven per cent from southeast to northwest there are twenty miles of track in the mine in no 4 mine the main entry is in a distance of 2500 feet with parallel entry for air the vein in this opening has an average thickness of fourteen feet this mine is equipped with an electric hoist which drops the loaded cars to the mouth of the slope from which point a gravity hoist conneys them to the bridge a distance of 1500 feet the down cars loaded pulling up the empties twenty horses are employed in the mine in which there are twelve miles of track no 4 is practically a new mine although on a continuation of no 1 vein both mines are lighted by electricity the return entry of no 1 which is used as a passageway passage way by the employees plo being illuminated in this manner for a distance of 2000 feet every precaution is taken to avoid accidents from any cause the dust of the mines is wet down daily four inspectors spec tors being employed in no I 1 and one in no 4 perfect ventilation is secured by the use of capell fans one of which is used in each mine the power equipment of the winter quarters plant includes seven horse horsepower power boilers two horsepower mcewen engines direct connected with thompson ryan electric generators one horsepower corliss engine belted to two electric generators and two ventilating fans in addition to which there are the three electric hoists and an electric locomotive in the mines the companas comp anys fine two story stone office building is heated by steam and lighted by electricity the town of schofield is a mile and a half below winter quarters and 95 per cent of the working population of this place is given employment by the company the men are given free transportation by the company to and from this work between schofield and the mine the employees in both mines work by the ton instead of the day |
