does not have to pass over the steep johnson s pass and is used by heavily loaded teams it connects with the other route at scribners since it goes I 1 oes due south after it Z geta crets around the north ond end of the mountains till it reaches the other road this route is slightly sli 11 ditl y farther than the other A third route is by way of the 0 S L R R to the first switch beyond lewiston and then west to vernon government pass and connects with the stage route at simp sons ons spring this is dotso not 0 o steep steel on the pass as the one over johnsons pass on the eastern side but it miles down to cottonwood spring a little sandy in places cottonwood is a pleasant place a small ranch where vegetables can sometimes be had and occasionally hay but no grain plenty of wood and the finest water here the traveler if he be wants fine water to drink must fill up his keg for lie ho will find no good water for fifty miles though water for his boock can be found it is about half a mile below before the water gives out and very heavy sand be beins begins 0 ins which is three spokes deep for about it a mile about one half a mile below cottonwood the road forks the regular stage route going south to the next ranch and thence to Simp sony spring the stage route is the one to take in wet weather but it is about fifty miles longer we will follow the same route however and go 0 o straight ahead for nine and one eighth miles to scribner s which is au an abandoned ranch on the flat and near some wacer holes which have springs I 1 in them the only grass liere here is salt grass hand branch at the well there is no mistaking it as there are abundant signs of camping there the well is about eight 11 feet deep ix is cribbed crabbed up and has three barvels barrels in it into which the artesian water flows flown the water is nearly fresh the salt taste is scarcely discernable discernible discern able there is no grass or fuel here and a more desolate place can hardly be
