Show IN southeastern UTAH denver western miner and financier the southeastern section of utah especially that portion between the colorado line and the green river is just now more attention than it has for years willis L hall who has just completed a trip of about miles in that section took occa occasion sidn to observe things in a mining nature while en route along the green and grand rivers he be says nothing is being done at the present time six miles below the town of green river a placer plant was installed at a cost of several years ago tests had demonstrated that gold existed in paying paying quantities in the big sand bars numerous attempts had been made to save this gold but it was too fine after the machinery was all in at the green river plant a thorough working test was made with a force of twelve men working day and night something was wrong with the machinery for it saved none of the 0 gold and the tailings showed as good values as the original sand in consequence of this the plant was closed down and remains so today A change of process wi will 11 be necessary before it can be made a success on the way down the river as the various strata crop out oat a prospector of experience could easily tell whether it would pay to locate for mineral there are numerous strata of greenish tinged rock varying in thickness from a fraction of an inell inch to several feet and in number from one to five from several of these I 1 secured samples ds believing they might possibly carry copper values these strata are continuous for miles and from what I 1 have read of the la sal copper district very much resemble that blanket formation the nearer the colorado river is approached the deeper these strata lie on the grand river there is much the same formation my theory regarding copper is to a certain extent confirmed by the fact that a number of claims are being ll 11 worked between the town of moab on the grand and the rio grande western railway while on the outskirts of the town of moab there are some copper claims staked out but idle this latter fact can be accounted for when it is known that the Moa bites are terribly slow and much prefer relocating each ve year ar to doing assessment work excellent specimens of copper ore are shown in the town As for gold in the rivers it must exist in paying quantities I 1 do not go by my own judgment I 1 in this matter although the quantity of black sand met occasionally on the bars would convince anyone with a slight knowledge Z of the subject that the y yellow ellow metal is to be found there on both rivers is this the case and after the cataract of the colorado has been passed the placer workings are known to be profitable when passing through the town of green river in june I 1 saw a large quantity of lumber and machinery belonging to the company which was being made ready for transport across the desert to the placer hollinas boldino hol dinas s on the colorado near hite when I 1 I 1 left ef t green river a few days ago a very large part of the machinery and lumber had been carried away as planned and he remainder was expected to follow in a few days the Hos kannin company is expending on this plant the plans provide that everything shall be placed on a huge boat machinery living rooms and all from the bottom of the river the sands will be lifted by bp dredging the gold separated and the sand dumped back into the stream for a distance 0 of f PH fifteen teen miles this work will be carried on oh and it will take years to go over the ground if the facilities are not increased gasoline power will be used the cost for this alone amounting to a day when the plant is working nine men will be employed and at least yards of dirt a day will be washed some of this will run as high hiah 0 as 10 cents to the yard but more of it i less so the amount of gold saved for each twenty four hours will be in the neighborhood of to 1000 the installation of this plant at such a cost was determined upon only after af ter thorough h investigation the other dredges at work on placer the northwest it has carried g gro 0 t il its jk the experimental w 0 r stage and is 4 plenty of money if the officers no now ala of pany did not see a good thing the 4 ahead colorado river scheme they tackled it never woul fanni dill they expect to b be e in in order by november on wor mild account oa 02 t weather in the cation canon t chev h ey can cana wor ki tween ten and eleven months ol of the theve being caused only by rurel reimis year and high water a aitt tt so you see if gold is found in quantities in the 8 sand a D d do down v there pasq pa and an 4 presence has been demonstrated in 14 streams above when the proper app apelian lian for saving that gold are brought in there i no doubt placer mining in that section W a great and active industry 17 |
