Show WOMAN'S RIGHTS. So long as the woman's rights party sought to advocate tbo rights of woman, the Herald endorsed them and advocated their causa. Wo have been and are in favor of woman enjoying enjoy-ing all tho rights which nature and justice declare hor entitled to. She should have the right to engage in any calling or business for which she has capacity and ability. She should rc-ceivo rc-ceivo as much wages as a man for an equal amount of tho same work, as well done as a man would do it. If she is taxed, she is entitled to a voice iu the choice of thoso who aro to assess as-sess the taxes and decree their disburs-ment. disburs-ment. But when tho woman-women party attempt to claim for the sex the right to exercise a licenso opposed to plain morality; when they seek to draw a line between the sexes and claim for their own a superiority over the other; 1 wheu they accept such leaders as thoso of tho Woodhull and Claflin stamp; when they seek not only to unsex the sex, but to opcu a floodgato of immorality immor-ality by which, if it were general, tho mothers of the next generation would scarcely be able to tell their own children where those children could rightfully look for their lather?, we beg to be couuted out. The woman suffrage party are running run-ning to as wild extremes in theory almost al-most as the Paris Communists. With strong grounds lor the movement, as in many other projected reforms radical extremists have pushed themselves forward into prominent positions, and these would graft upou the womau's rights party tho odious aud dangerous "free-love" ideas; and by lree-lovc we mean that theory which claims that a woman or a man may change her or his "affinity" "affi-nity" as often as a now one more attractive at-tractive can be found. This is the most dangerous theory, in its practice, that has yet found supporters and advocates ad-vocates in the niaeteenth century; for it strikes at the very foundation of society, so-ciety, destroys tho domestic organization organiza-tion upon which communities and nations na-tions are built; and would drag the world again into a condition of barbarism. bar-barism. With "free-love" tacked to it, the woman's rights movement ever can and never should succeed. |
