Much interest inter-est is felt here in relation to the elections elec-tions in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Iowa to-day. Full arrangements have been made to receive news at the earliest moment. Over three hundred voters left here yesterday for Philadelphia. Philadel-phia. Pardons for twelve of the Feman prisoners will be signed this week ; that of 0 Neil will head the list. The tines imposed in some cases will be remitted. re-mitted. Sailing of German Steamers. New York, 11. The steamship Cambria, of the Hamburg line, will leave tins port to-day direct for Hamburg. Ham-burg. The agents of the Bremen line do not intend to dispatch any more vessels ves-sels until they hear of the safe arrival out of the Hermann. The postmaster at New York having asked the Postmaster-General whether he should dispatch dis-patch mails to Europe by the Hamburg st-eamer which leaves to-day, the Postmaster-General replied that he considers consid-ers it unsafe and inexpedient to send mails by the German steamers at present, pre-sent, on account of their liability to captuie by French cruisers. Negroes ou Caste. N'ew York, 11. There was a meeting meet-ing of negroes in one of the rooms of the Cooper Institute last evening, to consider tho subject of their exclusion from hotel tables, sleeping car berths, steamboat state rooms, theatre par-imette par-imette seats, first-class liquor saloons, aud other choice places frequented by white , people. Speeches Were made denouncing the spirit of caste, and resolutions res-olutions were passed calling on Congress Con-gress to enact laws to enforce social equality between the races. Killed by a Boiler Explosion. Lowell, Mass., 11. Five men were killed this morning by a - boiler explosion explo-sion in Allen's saw-mill at Middlesex. Pennsylvania Election. Philadelphia, 11. The election is progressing with spirit. The' colored voters are exercising their privilege of voting for the first time. Declined a Duel. Richmond, Ya., 11. A difficulty between James Barbeur, editor of the Enquirer, and Major James W. Walker, member of the House of Delegates, terminated last night with a peremptory challenge from Barbeur, which was declined this morning, on the ground that the State Constitution disfranchises duelists. A Full Cabinet. Washington, If. The Cabinet session ses-sion to-day was attended by all the members, this being the first time in three months that a Cabinet meeting has been held without one or two heads of departments being absent. ab-sent. Lieut. General L. E. Chenery has been ordered to the naval rendezvous at San Francisco. The Science of Storms. Washington, Oct. 11. Signal men to be employed on the lakes, under the new system of watching the approach ap-proach of storms and reporting by telegraph and signals, for the benefit of commerce, have gone to their stations, and their repot ts will be commenced com-menced as soon as all arrangements can be perfected at the various signal posts. |
