The Nineteenth Century club met Friday Fri-day afternoon at the home of Mrs Westwood In the absence of the president pres-ident Mrs Wright occupied the chair and the business which came up at that time was soon disposed of An animated drill in parliamentary law was conducted by Miss Moore After a short recess roll call was responded to with quotations nearly every member mem-ber being present The remainder of the afternoon was devoted to American Ameri-can history Acquisition of Territory being the first topic and was presented by Mrs Barnes who illustrated her subject with maps of the various territories ter-ritories acquired by purchase treaty and conquest At the close of this paper the news of the past week was carefully reviewed by Miss Brinkerhoff and this led to a discussion of the most important events of the past few weeks Heretofore the news department of the club has been somewhat neglected but now every item pertaining to our coun try Is read with interest The pro gramme closed with a paper by Miss Peek on Tariff Legislation The skill ful handling of the subject showed that the author hal given it careful thought and was familiar with the ideas and arguments advanced by such men as Gladstone Blaine and Roger G Mills The critic reported the mistakes and the club adjourned OGDEN SOCIETY SOCIT The Aglaia held its regular meeting on March S at the home of Mrs George C Bent and was one of the best I meetings of the year The guests were Mrs Town Mrs Clark Mrs Mctcalf and Miss Shaw Mrs Coulter presided in her usual charming efficient manner The main business of the afternoon was to decide de-cide upon a course of study for the coming year It was determined to continue study in modern American literature and in certain lines of educational work A committee of five was appointed to draft a programme for next year All true Aglalans are expected to attend the coming lecture by Marlon Crawford for the benefit of the public library During the afternoon three excellent papers were given Mrs James G Paine in a careful well written paper I opened anew the beauty and charm of Whittiers Snow Bound Miss Kimball treated her subject of Child Study in so bright witty and original a way that > i was thoroughly enjoyed by all On account of the enforced absence of Ir Ransford Smith her paper on Thoreau was read by Mrs Fletcher I was one of the few ideal literary efforts ef-forts of the year The club solicits Mrs Smith to reread her paper at another meeting Mrs Clarke favored the club with two exquisite vocal selections Dainty refreshments were served
