Show POLICEMEN WILL TA Y No Action Taken by the Commission Com-mission Yesterday A NEW PLAN SUGGESTED REDUCTION IX SALARIES ALL ALONG THE LiNE PROPOSED A Detailed Report From the Health Department For the Month of July The City in n Healthy Condition The Gravity SewerSomething About Milk The proposed reduction on the police force will not be made just at present I and it may not be made at I Although it was generally opposed throughout the city it was supposed that ten and possibly twelve heads would fall into the basket and there has been much uneasiness among the policemen for several days The board of police and fire commissioners commis-sioners met at President Salisburys I office yesterday afternoon all of the I members being present while Council men Young and Cohn were also in attendance i at-tendance The meeting was of an informal in-formal nature but the whole matter j was discussed The general opinion I i was that inasmuch as the council had the right to say how many men should i be employed and what theil salaries should be that body would take upon itself the responsibility of designating the men who were to be dismissed and carrying out the plan inaugurated bv it I Councilman Young thought i would hardly be right to lay the men off at I this time for many reasons While the men were needed i would also be difficult dif-ficult for them to find employment in I other lines just now He believed the coming winter would be the hardest experienced here since 1854 and thought the men would rather have a general reduction in salaries all through than I see a number of the men thrown out of positions After some further discussion the whole matter was allowed to go over without action and this virtually places pla-ces the responsibility of selecting the men for dismissal upon the council unless un-less the plan suggested by Mr Young is followed The apointment of C E Wood J C Paul and W H Bywater was confirmed con-firmed Commissioner Frank W Jennings left for San Francisco last night and Fire Chief Devine left for Montreal to attend the convention of engineers |
