Show COULDNT BULLDOZE HIM Judge Hoce the nominee of the citizens cit-izens of the Fifth Precinct opposed to Church and State for the lower branch of tho Legislature was also elected Chairman of the Precinct Committee The meeting was not called under the auspices of any political party either National or local although an unsuccessful unsuc-cessful attempt was made to identify it with the Liberal organization The Republican Re-publican organs intimation yesterday that the omission to elect delegates to the Liberal County Convention was an oversight was untrne A motion to that effect was made but was so promptly and emphatically opposed that it was withdrawn before coming to a vote Had it been voted upon it would have been defeated by at least ten to one This was conclusive evidence that the spirit of the meeting was almost unanimously unani-mously opposed to identification with any political party whatever It was simply a meeting called for the purpose of nominating a candidate for the House from that precinct to which all antiChurch and State voters were invited in-vited to attend It was numerously attended at-tended and tho proceedings were harmonious notwithstanding the firebrand fire-brand which was attempted to be introduced intro-duced but which was so quickly extinguished ex-tinguished by the good sense independence independ-ence and patriotism of the assemblage The Republican organ boomed the meeting meet-ing in the expectation that it could dictate its proceedings When ingloriously in-gloriously defeated in the meeting it still attempted to carry out its rule or ruin policy by instigating threats to the nominee that unless ho placed himself directly under the Liberal banner and as Chairman of the Precinct Committee called a meeting to elect delegates to the Liberal County Convention he would not receive the support of the clique which it assumes to control Without due reflection Judge loge signed a call to that effect but upon further consideration came to the sensible sensi-ble conclusion that he was not invested with such authority and promptly rescinded re-scinded the orders for its publication in the two Gentile papers Had ho done otherwise he would have destroyed every chance for hb own election and probably that of any other antiMormon candidate that might be nominated in his precinct The Republican paper this morning attempts at-tempts to throw cold water upon Judge loges nomination by hypocritical whining whin-ing of complications whichlo not exist except in the heartwishes of those who attempted to induce him to betray the trust reposed in him by the loyal people of his precinct There is no awkward dilemmaexcept in the cussedness of Ih6 few malcontents and obstructionists whose selfish purpose having been thwarted would sacrifice the loyal cause t upon the altar of their disappointment and chagrin The proper course is plainly plain-ly outlined and clearly marked Judge E Hoge has heretofore acted with the Liberal Lib-eral party and probably his sympathies 1 are now in ucison with that organization He is the unanimous choice of the loyal people of his Precinct as indicated by the unanimous voice of the mass convention which made him its nominee Let the Liberal County Convention ratify the nomination It will most certainly 1 do so if it is sincere in its professions of devotion to the cause and actuated by a desire to promote its success The nominee in National politics poli-tics is a Democrat and the Democratic t County Convention would not in our opinion stultify itself or its principles by I selecting him as its candidate for his Assembly i As-sembly District While Tun DEMOCRAT does not assume to dictate the policy of its party in this matter it most unhesitatingly recommends this cooperative course It will thus indicate its willingness to make such reasonable concessions as was evinced by the County Committee in its overtures to the presumed representations of the Liberal party With this tripartite endorsement the really loyal elementu will be thoroughly combined Such a spike team ought certainly to be strong enough to pull the candidate through against the countertug of the Mormon equines and such attempts to manipulate manipu-late the brakes as will probably be made by the marplots represented by tho morning paper i |
