Show r AN OGDEN BUDGET From SnIt Lake to tile Weber ill a I Rcclincr of the D IL Gr i Ogden Its Improvements and the Molecular Phone A Splendid Oration by Judge Powers on Memorial Day On either side of the railroads the ride from Salt Lake to Ogden is a very pleasant pleas-ant one both of the roads passing through green fields pastures and orchards allowing a superb view of the great lifeless life-less lake cradled at the foot of the western west-ern hills and affording a full survey of the picturesque villages dotted along the eastern slope of the Wasatch range There is yet however a primitive wilderness wilder-ness about this stretch of countrya lack of thorough systematic tillage that makes it a GROTESQUE PARODY OX AGRICULTURE To dicrnif v these fields with the name I i of farms Still they are beautiful and I it is only a matter of time and cultivation when they will present an appearance not to be equaled on the vast plains and prairies further east The growing crops this spring give hope of an early and an abundant harvest I Wheat is already heading out and erelong ere-long will ripen into rich golden fields that will make the farmers heart rejoice It may not be generally known that the D IL G coming from the East attaches a special coach at Salt Lake to the Og denbound train Suchhowever is the fact and it is not an ordinary car either I I as it is provided with adjustable reclining chairs much to the comfort and enjoyment enjoy-ment of the passengers though few seem to understand how to work them It is really amusing to watch the man nvres of the uninitiatedmany of them experienced experi-enced travelers toowhen they sit down and endeavor to tilt their chairs back and fail They try to look unconcerned so as not to give themselves away and ia I an offhand manner commence a recon I noitre of the puzzling concern most of them finally giving up in disgust their I own stupidness unless they are relieved I by some one who knows how the thing works j und then when the little spring under the right hand side of the scat is lifted and the chair flops back suddenly the ladies quickly exclaim OH MY But finding that the train is still on the rails with a smile of satisfaction most of them remark Isnt this nice Thus I comfortably reclining the traveler in about an hour and a half after leaving the I metropolis arrives at Ogden Many and various flights of fancy have I been indulged in at one time and another and by sundry persons and newspapers I as to the future of this JIURGOXTIIEWEBER I Many an air castle has been builded especially for Ogden People have believed i be-lieved it possible for the place to become the head and centre of wealth population popula-tion manufacturing interests and rail way connections of all the intermountain I intermoun-tain regions Their most cherished and hopeful anticipations have so far been I I like soap bubbles floating in the air nothing no-thing more substantial than their own I incorporal selves Yet Ogden today is one of those marvelous and beautiful j I western towns that has sprung up under i I I the magic wand of industry and enterprise enter-prise j with the Weber river curling its way around the south and west sides of the city and the Ogden river flowing almost al-most through the heart of it the sight as seen from a housetop is one unequaled in the west If the vain hopes indulged in for Ogdens future had been raised on the beautiful locality there could be no I I doubt but that the place would have become be-come all that the most sanguine looked forIt I I It is two years since your correspondent was in Ogden During that time there I has not been any very marked improvement I I improve-ment The erection of one or two business i I busi-ness blocks the grading of some of the bench streets the improvement of Lester 1 Les-ter Park the operation of a street railway rail-way of about three miles and the introduction j I intro-duction of the Molecular telephone I system are aboutall the apparent changes for the better The last mentioned enterprise I I en-terprise is growing more popular as ite advantage become better known There are now 128 MOLECULAR INSTRUMENTS IX USE and the superintendent says that if Salt Lake only had the grit not to be blurted by the Bell company and a connection way opened between the two cities that 50 more instruments would be subscribed I for at once The Ogden company is willing even to go to the expense of build ing the connecting line if the system could be introduced into Salt Lake City The Molecular is a vastly superior transmitter trans-mitter especially for long distances In the East distinct communications have been received at the enormous distance of OVER TWEIVE HUNDRED MILES Besides being a better system it is a third cheaper the instruments renting I for ji2 and j 3 for residences and offices respectively On Decoration Day only about 150 people I peo-ple took advantage of the excursion excur-sion to Ogden Just about the time of i I their arrival the Ogden people began to I gather on the streets in large crowds About 10 a in the Sixth Ward Baud I marched to Main street playing a lively air and shortly after a Jong procession I filed away to the cemetery where the I customary ceremonies of decorating the graves of the dead soldiers were per formed by the I I GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC I I Never before was there such a large crowd of people at the Ogden cemetery I On nearly every grave were dropped wreaths and of I bouquets flowers in memory mem-ory of the sacred and beloved dead The afternoon races attracted a big throng and notwithstanding they lasted till G oclock the people kept the up excitement ex-citement and enthusiasm till tho finisi I But the gathering in the evening at Les tel P1Jk was the tiptop entertainment of the day Time Pavilion a spacious and very commodious building was crammed 1 to overflowing hundreds listening from the outside It is not within the limits of this letter to detail the exercises of the occasion but a few remarks are ventured on lioN JCDQE POWERS I And the brilliant oration he delivered Judge Powers is a gentleman a trifle above medium height slightly English in his appearance and of slight I physical i proportions He has a splendid voice and his deliver on Saturday showed him I to be an experienced public speaker though not a great orator His addless I was a rhetorical bouquet from the I I I i flowers of our language full of pathos i and patriotic sentiment and served to increase the respect and honor the ple of Ogden already have peo j I I Judge g ready for Mao their Znj new I |
