Show APPLICANTS FOR STATEHOOD. The Bills to Admit Montana and Washington Territory Come tp in the Senate. Washington, April 2. At the suggestion of Mr. Logan, yesterday, an understanding was secured by whioh his army bill will be taken up Monday next immediately after the morning business, and its consideration to continue throughout the day and, if necessary, neces-sary, from day to day till disposed of. Piatt consented that the Washington .Territory bill might be informally laid aside in order to permit of this action on the army bill, but on condition that the Washington Territory bill should not lose its right of way. The hour of 2 o'clock arriving, the Washington Wash-ington Territory bill was laid before the Senate, and Mr. Dolph resumed the floor and continued his remarks in favor of the admission of the Territory; atld" Baid" if admitted ad-mitted it would soon become one of the most important States of the Republic. Mr. Morgan supported the bill. He said he was informed by Senator Stanford that a line of British steamers was now advertised adver-tised for regular fortnightly trips between British Columbia and Hong Kong. We should, he said, be a competitor with Great Britain for the commerce of the Pacifio Ocean. Mr. Frye said the Senator from California (Mr. Stanford) ought also to have informed Mr. Morgan that Great Britain did not pay that line two cents a letter for carrying the British mails and did not have a Postmaster-General Postmaster-General who vetoed an appropriation which would have paid ten. Mr. Morgan admitted that it was true; he was sorry the people could not agree, but there would be no difficulty in agreeing about Washington Territory. The committee amendments to the bill were then voted on seriatim and agreed to. Mr. Dolph moved an amendment which was agreed to, exempting from the provision that required the school lands not to be sold for less than 5 an acre, certain lands already disposed of for the same purpose, at a lower price. Mr. Dolph also moved an amendment providing that the counties of Idaho that are to become a part of the State of Washington shall not by the change be released from responsibility for their proportion pro-portion of the bonded debt of the present Territory of Idaho, and providing a method for ascertaining the proper proportion. Rejected. Re-jected. Mr. Voorhees submitted as a substitute his bill last presented (an enabling act) providing pro-viding for the admission of Montana. This remains the pending question when the bill comes again before the Senate. After executive session the Senate adjourned ad-journed till Monday. |
