Show WANT MORE. A special to the Tribune, says that the Conservatives of Canada are urging the , Government of the Province to assert the claims of Canada to the State of Maine, which they allege are just. The French press of Montreal gravely doubts whether the United States would be willing to accept ac-cept compensation in money for the State of Maine. The French press of Montreal express a very sensible doubt, and one that the Canadians may rest assured would be made a fact if Canada were to press-her claims. The claims are so grotesque and absurd that they are not worthy of one moment's serious consideration, consider-ation, and it is more than likely that the whole thing is a canard. If Canada has good grounds on which to claim the State of Maine, she likewise has good grounds on -which to claim the States which constituted the original Thirteen Colonies, and she might extend her claim i to Michigan and the Northwest Territory, : and even the Louisiana purchase. The ' claims about which the Conservatives of j Canada are anxious are far more ridicu- l lous than anything else. But it would j be folly to expect anything else from j Conservatives. |
