M Horton Sheehan Deserves Respect Browsing the Aug 31 edition of the Globe I was shocked to read Aaron Zundel's article titled Cindy Sheehan creates contro contro- versy The article to my surprise surprise surprise sur sur- prise read more like a closing statement from The 0 Reily factor The only things thing's missing were a reference to the protestors protes protes- tors as wimps and liars and the closing statement of of I wish they would all just shut up Zundel in a misguided effort to criticize the antiwar movement movement movement move move- ment does the students of a grave disservice The author blasted Sheehan for creating a 4 controversy controversy by expounding what he clearly views as an unpopular opinion Regrettably from this sort of behavior strays the simple act of voicing an opinion opinion opinion ion towards that of encouraging repression The author shows little regard for Sheehan's own opinion calling calling calling call call- ing her stat statements ments ignorant while satirically labeling the pro pro- as peace loving Americans Zundel then goes goeson on to state his own opinion as to what defines a peace loving American If they the protestors protestors protestors protes protes- tors were really so righteous and freedom loving they would be championing the toppling of Hussein and calling forthe forthe for forthe the overthrow of a handful of other crack pot dictators The inherent hypocrisy of such a statement is dumbfounding If history can serve as a guide we as Americans should realize that top i itt t t t ij s t t tl improve ve th iv tig of anyone Rather it unleashes more violence oppression oppression oppression sion and chaos Violence begets violence This is a hard lesson to learn but one that Sheehan is championing Zundel goes on to call Sheehan and her camp known as Camp Casey a deception Each time Cindy Sheehan kneels at her herson's herson's herson's sons son's cross to cry the media has been invited and scheduled to tape the event wrote Zundel This attack demonstrates a lack of understanding of how the modern media operates All mainstream media is staged to a H u t are r certain extent ow i eren Mrs Sheehan's conferences conference's from Camp Casey than the Presidents President's broadcast speeches before a hand picked audience The difference is sadly that when Sheehan sheds a tear its it's a alot alot alot lot more believable I believe that the tone of the article and the aggression shown towards Sheehan by many is a direct response to the growing number of Americans who are vocally expressing discontent for forthe forthe forthe the policies of the Bush Administration and the war in Iraq There are those who would wish to silence Sheehan simply by issuing personal attacks but she much to her credit endures It takes a lot of courage to stand standup standup standup up for what you believe regardless regardless regardless regard regard- less of your position I would hope that those at the Globe would encourage the sharing of opinions in a respectful way Unfortunately I felt Mr Zundel's article displayed many of the regrettable traits found in inflammatory inflammatory inflammatory matory media today Sam Cooper The American Tsunami Hurricane Katrina has slammed into the gulf coast with all her lier fury Left in her path is a aswath aswath aswath swath of destruction that takes one back to the tsunami which earlier year killed tens of thousands and destroyed cities across is vast death zone As the I first pictures and video begin streaming in to be replayed again and again on TV screens across the world I must pause to ask a very serious question Where is the vast and worldwide outpouring of pledges of aid from countries ries around the world as was the case following the tsunami This one question leads to many others These questions deal with corporate and donations here within the US which up racked by the millions within n br tie fit fist t p res f Indonesia i ia iaTi aTi Sri and b Sri t Lanka W. W Why is it it that when a natural disaster affects the US a blind eye is turned in its direction by bythe bythe bythe the rest of the world Why are the wallets in pockets and the strings purse-strings pulled snug here at home Do the citizens of areas left unaffected by this tragedy just turn away and say the government government government gov gov- will take care of it We Weare Weare Weare are the government It is my dollars and yours that will be taken from other val- val programs or added to the ever-burgeoning ever national debt I have yet to see a UN or International Aid Society helit heli- heli t r truck or nr van n nn on the scene cope up u. u u vu of this disaster I have seen very similar footage of total destruction destruction destruction tion and of people being rescued from rooftops and trees I have heard the tales of I just could hang on to her when the water hit I lost my wife little baby son daughter etc Have we so alienated the rest of the world with our foreign foreign foreign for for- eign policy that we are to be left to out when disaster strikes our homeland Have we the citizens of the United States of Entitlements become so reliant on the government to be bethe bethe bethe the big red white and blue mommy and daddy there to fix every scrape and bail us out of every situation Am I alone in these feelings There are many many issues which require the generosity generosity generosity generos generos- ity of others around the world In nearly all of those cases the US leads in the scale and capacity of the giving This is a time to begin to change the policy of wide open accounts and when disaster disaster disaster ter occurs elsewhere and to do what is right What is right is to help right here There are myriad problems outside of this recent disaster right here at home It is time to fix our own problems before we even think about trying to fix the rest of the worlds' worlds Scott L Ritchie Students needed for Hurricane fund
