Show Students Listen To Utah On Attorney Nicaragua K by Ron Davidson A number of students went out of their way to listen Ho to a Utah attorney give his opinion of American involvement in Nicaragua Ross Anderson spent three weeks visiting Nicaragua and is considered by many to tobe tobe be an authority on the Central American situation Andersons Anderson's opinion was clear The United States has no right subsidizing ing the Nicaraguan rebels with money to overthrow the government He began the lecture with a bit of Nicaraguan history saying t the e US U.S. Marines were used to overthrow the government in the early 1900 s. s The United States established a court system in the country then destroyed it when it ruled against American action Anderson cited an incident when the CIA w was s caught mining the Nicaraguan harbor The United States refused to accept judgment by the International Court saying it h had q no jurisdiction in the matter What the Reagan administration is doing inv in in Nicaragua what it did in s Grenada and now in Libya constitutes the greatest breach of international law ever Anderson emphasized The current administration is the greatest international outlaw He said the US U.S. is sponsoring a group in Nicaragua that that- uses terrorism murder torture and rape to accomplish their goals Anderson also m mentioned the famed terrorist manual by the CIA used in Nicaragua Its ironic that we criticize the Soviets and their invasion of Afghanistan while we are doing the same thing in Nicaragua he said There is no no question of A American sponsored terrorism in Nicaragua Anderson said the recent elections in the country paint a clear picture that the Nicaragua people dont don't want American involvement in their country He said the elections were monitored by many international observers who found no fraud in the election process The go government in Nicaragua is backed by the Soviet Union but Anderson claims that the United States pushed Nicaragua to that end He said no one would sell them arms so they had to turn to the Soviets There is no Soviet control in Nicaragua said Anderson But the Soviets are providing 6 them with arms Anderson said the Soviet commitment nt to Nicaragua is minimal and if the US U.S. would stop helping the Contras then the Soviets would stop sending arms Im I m not opposed to the Contras nor am I opposed to the said Anderson I I believe the US U.S. should ha get out of it and let them take care of f the problem themselves Anderson claims no affiliation with any group for or against American involvement veme t. t He says his is an individual crusade because I think its it's a horrible thing that the United States is doing |
