Show I WEIR HUMAN by Daniel Weir Journalism It will soon be final week once nce again We will be cramming to get all of the assignments done that we have put off doing until we had to do them N Next ext comes the long hours of studying studying studying study study- ing and tension with the finals What do we get for all of our labors We get geta a letter Some seem to be better at getting high grades than others During high school I often wondered how that kid with glasses who sat at the front of the classroom got to be so smart During my first quarter here at in 1979 I got a wonderful 63 At that time I wasn't too disappointed disappointed disappointed dis dis- dis- dis appointed because I didn't think that I could do much better and I didn't care to try Something drastic happened happened happened hap hap- about one year later that made me have a different outlook on life In July 1980 I was in a small mining mining mining min min- ing town in the of South America There were only four Americans Americans Americans Amer Amer- in that pueblo when the chief of police decided to go on a spy hunt We were brought in and accused of being Ronald Reagans Reagan's personal I am sure that llallagua is not vital to the Bolivian national security nor is the White House even aware that it exists But nonetheless less they saw things differently While in that llallagua jail I saw my best friend struck by the butt of a pistol which knocked him I tried to assist him by straightening out his tangled legs They felt quite lifeless At that moment I feared for our lives We were however released a short time tim later relatively unharmed unharmed unharmed un un- un- un harmed and left with most of our possessions As w we walked up the street a away way from that jail I realized how fragile life is and how good it is to be alive I returned to in 1982 with a different attitude about grades In fact my grades are such that the Who's Who in America accepted my nomination to their publication this year The question that I have asked myself is what do I do now differently that I didn't do before Probably the most important aspect of getting a good grade is self If you dont don't believe that you can succeed you never will is very important With the right attitude one desires high grades enough to tomake tomake tomake make the sacrifice to get them The sacrifices are time and effort If a student attends class daily and studies no less than two and no more than four hours every night he will get As Fall quarter I was working 30 hours a week I had 16 credit hours and I got a 40 that quarter If I Ican Ican Ican can pull that tha off anybody can Of course there are some other things that are important to do for a grade A student needs to find out early in the quarter just exactly what the instructor wants and do exactly that If you disagree with your teacher let it ride You may win the battle but you will never win the war that way It is important to evaluate your teachers teacher's tests If they seem to be coming coming coming com com- ing from only the lecture dont don't spend c too much time in the book Watch closely how he uses the of and the of answers Teachers are animals of habit just like the rest of us Some like tricky technical questions while others are interested in a firm basic under under- standing A student must have the tester in mind when studying for a test in order to be most efficient |
