WELCOME: weather means fewer ducks for hunters this year Dry This is the worst duck huntseason in years, according to ing avid hunter, Brett Roper. Dry, drought weather has deduced from the duck population especially in northern Utah areas. And, with the new state laws enforced by the DWR, ducks are not as easily accessible. The limit for ducks one hunter may obtain has gone from seven to four during the last ten years. Hunters who used to hunt one half hour before sunrise and a half hour after sunset, can now only hunt between sunrise and sunset S teel shot is required for all waterfowl hunting in Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Salt Lake and Utah counties. Copper plated, nickel plated and other lead alloy shot materials are toxic and cannot be used for waterfowl hunting in steel shot areas. The number of duck hunters has dropped from an estimated 40,000 four years ago, to 20,000. It was also noted that during the 1st 8 years, the major duck Pheasant hunt won t be quite as good Prospects for the 1988 pheasant hunt are not great, but Division of Wildlife Resources biologists predict success similar to last year in most areas of the state. The overall hunter success ratio is still below the average of 1 bird per hunter on opening day. The decline in pheasant population in Utah is the result of a combined loss of quantity and quality of habitat due to urbanization, flooding, and modem agricultural practices. This combination of facthat hunters will have to means tors work for their birds, says Jay Roberson, DR upland game biologist We expect less than 50,000 hunters in the field this year compared with the 80.000 historically. The pheasant harvest should be about half of the 225 .000 birds taken in a good year. The pheasant season length is 14 days statewide. As usual, the bag limit is two cocks per day. A limited number of trespass permits for pheasant hunting on Posted Hunting Units are now available at DWR offices. The posted program is a new cooperative program between DWR and private land owners. A group of landowners may provide access to their land to permit holders. Fifty percent of the permits are sold to the general public. Prices depend on season length, species hunter and quality of hunt - with Valley Camp of Utah Inc., citing exorbitant costs as the reason for cancelling the contract. The termination will be effective March 19, 1989, according to UP&L spokesman Dave Mead. Mead said UP&L has filed Tough Tires Tom Gfomtemisetni 2 steel belts Polyester radial Rep.
