Show Page 2 Salina Sun Add a Wednesday, April 10, 1996 low-inco- me voice to the debate , To the Editor: Representatives should decide wilderness area There is something very important missing from the current political debate over budget priorities and taxes. Little has been said about how to ensure that people can survive, let alone escape from poverty. What little discussion there is of these issues-ev- en in debates over welfare reform, jobs, childcare, and health care-t- oo often focuses on rhetoric and ideology rather than a true understanding of poverty related problems. But what really is missing from the debate is the voice of people themselves. They are the true experts; the people who know the reality of what it is to live in poverty. , Its time to add their voices to the debate and to begin a real discussion of poverty and its causes. People here in our communities have an opportunity to be a part of an historic national conversation on these issues. Six County Association of Governments AgingHuman Resources Department is sponsoring a community wide Dialogue on Poverty at 6:30 p.m., April 1, 1996, at Manti Courthouse, 160 North Main, Manti for Sanpete County. This community forum is part of the National Dialogue on Poverty, a nationwide discussion about the social and economic dynamics that lead to poverty and the impact of poverty on individuals, families, and communities. Similar discussions are being held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States during 1996. The local dialogues will produce local, state, and national consensus statements about what needs to be done to address the causes and conditions of poverty. Most importantly, this community forum is an opportunity for all segments of our commun ity to come together to talk about poverty here in Sanpete County and what we can do together to help people in our own communities become more No more rhetoric. Lets start really talking. As a Washington county official, howts ever, I have become tired of standing by and watching call for 5.7 acres of wilderness. First of all, most of the 5.7 acres they are proposing have never been studied by the BLM because they clearly do not meet the criteria. Of the acres that have been studied, many of them were found unsuitable for the same reason--the- y do not meet the criteria set by Congress and the Department of the Interior. It is preposterous to ask the federal government to violate their own regulations just to satisfy the environmentally-consciou- s public. have taken it upon themselves to represent Secondly, these eco-nuthe majority of Utahns. This is simply not the case. The local government officials who do represent the majority helped draft the first wilderness proposal that was recently rejected by the U.S. Senate due to the tactics of these wilderness groups. The citizens of Utah have a right to be fairly represented. At the polls they elect representatives that will fight for their rights and values as citizens of the state. The fight over wilderness should not be left to the extremist environmental groups who would probably prefer that we all moved out of the state and left it to them for their private stomping grounds. s Ronald W.
