Limiting fat is an important part of controlling calories too! Ounce for ounce, or spoonful for spoonful, foods high in fat contain more than two times more calories than foods high in carbohydrates. For example, a tablespoon of butter or margarine contains 1QP calories, whereas a tablespoon of sugar contains 46 calories. Calcium is very important in diets of youth where bones are still growing and forming. Calcium gives your bones their strength and structure. Lack of sufficient daily calcium during young adult years makes bones more susceptible to osteoporosis in later years. Iron is another vital nutrient. In the sample of 55 students, 13 and 14 years old, only 9 had sufficient iron. Iron deficiency results first in reduction of stored iron, then reduction of hemoglobin in red blood cells. When iron stores are depleted, the body cannot make enough hemoglobin to fill its new red blood cells, causing cells to become smaller and carry less oxygen to tissues where it s needed. This condition is known as Iron Deficiency Anemia, which is related to low dietary iron. This leaves you tired, draggy, and unproductive. How we feel and what we eat are tied very closely together. Through proper nutrition, we can live more healthy, active lives. Lets help our children get the nutrition they need.
