Show VT meeting of the new year for Sorosis Club First The Sorosis Club met at the Carriage Court for their Opening Social, September 11, 1991. Their theme this year is, Loyalty to My Country. The tables were decorated in red, white and blue. The members were served a Cornish Hen dinner. Past president Elaine Allred, gave her report and had Secretary Marilyn Cook give the Financial Statement, after which she turned the time to the new President, Dorothy Fowles. Hostesses for the evening were the Program Committee, Dalla Mickelsen, Doris Horton and Shirley Curtis. They presented each member a booklet of programs to be presented during the upcoming year. They started out in the farming industry, then went on to operating a sawmill in Wayne County; working a cattle operation in Arizona, then back to Aurora where Max worked for SUFCo for twenty years and Beth ran the Aurora Merc, for 10 years. They also owned and operated the Star Theater in Gunnison for seven years. After Max retired from the coal mine he went birthday. She has served as president of her Young Women's Organization many times. Brooke was a Semiary graduate where she served on the Seminary Council. She has graduated from NS HS and will be attending Southern Utah University this Fall. Sanpete building receives award A Sanpete building is among the eleven historically significant homes, churches and public buildings to receive the 1991 Utah Heri- tage Foundation Preservation Award. GalThe Ephraim lery, 100 North Main Street, Ephraim, is a 2 story vernacular stone structure with an open truss attic area. It was built in 1871-7The building was part of the Mercantile Ephraim Institution complex. As the cooperative system ended in the 1880s the Granary went through a variety Co-opA- rt 2. ( of uses. By 1969 both the Granary and its companion building, the Co-o- p building were threatened with demolition. After several schemes and plans were attempted to save and reuse the important historic buildings over a fifteen year period, success was finally secured with a coalition of public and private sector support. The Ephraim Co-o- p Building was restored in 1990asacraftstore on the first floor, and a public meeting space on the second floor. T'v -- ! f 1 1 'vs vr:mu!i Fremont Indian State Park will hold their annual Autumnal Equinox Study and Educational Day, Monday, September 23, beginning at 7 a.m. Anyone interested in participating in the days events is invited. There is a $1 admission charge to the state park. J uice, coffee and doughnuts will be served for people wishing to watch the equinox. Included were: Dent Sorensen, Salina, who placed 2nd in the ICS Class of the International Chili Society Cookoff, and look third place honors in the Salsa Contest. Area Scouting volunteer honored for service An outstanding Scouting vol- unteer from this area was honored at Timpview High School auditorium, where he received his Silver Beaver award. Ronald L. Bosshardt, of Redmond, was one of the fifty-seve- n unselfish men and women who have contributed so much to the development of our youth through Boy Scouting, said Rees A. Falkner, Utah Scout Executive. Selection of recipients is made by an Awards Committee of previous winners who base their selec tion on nominations submitted by nominee peers. In addition to this years recipients, 1990 recipient Bliss Brinker-hof- f, of Bicknell, also received his award. A rancher and volunteer, Brinkerhoff had been unable to attend last year's program. These bacteria exist either as spores or as vegetative cells. The spores, which are comparable to plant seeds, can survive harmlessly in soil and water for many years. When ideal conditions exist for growth, the spores produce vegetative cells which multiply rapidly and may produce a deadly toxin within three or four days of growth in an environment consisting of: a moist, low acid food a temperature between 40 and 120 degrees Hess than 2 oxygen Botulinum spores are on most fresh food surfaces. Because they grow only in the absence of air, they are harmless on fresh foods. Correct processing times and methods must be used to ensure destruction of the largest number of heat resistent microorganisms in home canned foods. Whether the food should be processed in a pressure canner or boiling water canner to control botulinum bacteria depends on the acidity in the food. Although tomatoes are usually considered an acid food, some are known to have pH of slightly over 4.6, and must be acidified with 2 T of lemon juice and processed the recommended time from a USDA tested recipe. Botulinum spores are hard to destroy. Therefore all low acid food must be sterilized at temperatures of 240 degrees to 250 degrees F. You have to pressure cook at 13 ponds of pressure at the altitude of Sevier County to reach these temperatures. Time required ranges from 20 to 100 minutes depending on the kind of food, how it is packed and size of jars.
