Two violations readily seen in past years include hunters with unquivered arrows in vehicles, and hunters shooting from vehicles. The bed of any truck is sull considered within the vehicle. Archers may hunt using archery gear only. It is unlawful for any sportsman who has obtained an archery permit to have in his possession any type of firearm while on an area open to archery hunting. A person obtaining an anhcr permit may in addition, possess one deer control permit. Limned entry archery permittees can hunt only on that area specified on their permit. Camps throughout the Archery Gooseberry area proudly displayed their trophies as the weekend drew to a close. DWR officers attend Brian Head law enforcement camp Throughout the State of Utah, Conservation Officers are Class OnePeace Officers, thus having the authority to enforce all the laws within the state. As with all peace officers, such as the Utah Highway Patrol, County Sheriff, etc., a certain amount of annual police-typ- e training is required to retain this peace officer status. Last week, the Division of Wildlife Resources sponsored a summer camp at Brian Head, for police training for conservation officers and other biologists. Training included such things as crime scene investigation, metal detector retaining and update, high stress simulations, close firearms combat, firearms training, vehicle and trailer backing procedures, as well as classroom work dealing with first aid and legal materials update. The training is essential and well timed since the first big game hunt - the archery deer hunt began August 20, with additional game seasons running continually through January of 1989. In addition to this annual summer training, DWR personnel involved in any type of law enforcement will receive specialized training throughout the year. The DWR will be holding roadblocks throughout the state this fall, according to Regional Law Enforcement officer Dali Winn, of Cedar City. Winn indicated that roadblocks would not only be on major highways, but that a mass of secondary blocks would be set up are a verv successful law enforcement tool and will reduce the amount of illegal activity that typically occurs in the fall. Also summer roadblocks held resulted in many gross overlimits of fish and other violations, Winn noted. Winn expects that some roadblocks will consist of up to sixty officers and will check over two thousand hunters, while other roadblocks will consist of two officers working back roads. Winn added that roadblocks The Salina Sun buys 460 acre USPS Habitat) program contributed $16,000 toward the purchase price of the property, located just southwest of the tow of Manti, near the Gunnison Reservoir.
