Show roosevelt is the hub of the urn uin tah basin and the uintah basin is the largest undeveloped part of the intermountain section for the benefit of those who know little about this vast region of rich country and that means most everybody because even the people of utah are quite ignorant of the magnitude and the importance of this pors tjan of utah let us give you a brief bricf outline or birds oye eye view na as it were of the basin the inland empire of which roosevelt is the commercial dom mercial center the basin takes up a scope of country in the northeastern part of utah about seventy miles north and south and about one hundred and forty miles east and west IN UTAH and a large scope of country in colorado that is geographically and commercially a part of the utah portion this big region is in reality a huge basin completely surrounded by mountains having no gaps or low places except the canyons cut by green river on the north and on the south but these canyons are precipitous the water hugging both walls making roadways impossible and boating is dangerous owing to the rapids and tortuous channel on the north is the giant uin tah range the highest range in utah having peaks far higher than any others in the state and there is no gap or ridge lower than 10 feet above sea level this range joins the wasatch on the west above coalville Co alville or at the head of the provo and weber rivers and extends on east to the main range of the in colorado on the west is the wasatch range which runs east of coal ville kamas and heber city with possibly no place lower than feet near soldier summit vie main ridge divides one branch going south into san pete county and the other branch taking an easterly couise likewise with no low places or gaps and joining the book cliff and brown cliff ranges which lie ile north and east of price and which continue on into colorado thus on the north on the west and on the south we have mountains mountains and more mountains and one must climb of the same thing mountains with no natural entrances no places through which roads may easily build ryes r yes the stranger may say but why is this rich section still undeveloped at this late data mountains vont wont keep out the roads an and d the settlers this is easily explained however more than forty years ago several bands of the ute indians were gathered up and brought to the basin which uncle sam told them was thereafter their own home and the white man would keep off A military post was established at F fort ort duchesne and soldiers were vere until five years ago stationed there to see that the indians kept aiace peace 7 in 1905 the indians having de creased in number to about 1000 and the country being entirely too large for them the govern I 1 ment opened to settlement all but about acres and some grazing ground canals costing nearly one million dollars were constructed forthe for the irrigating of these farm rands lands the white peo pie ale rushed in in 1905 and quickly took up the more desirable agricultural ri lands by homestead I 1 ing it is admitted now by the government that the lands with 1 drawn for the indians are 1001 I 1 per cent more than the indians can ever use therefore the government ern ment under the direction of I 1 albert H kneale with office at fort duchesne is now selling the surplus lands and leasing a large part of the remainder as the indians are slow to take up farming 1 the white people have increased rapidly in numbers in that part t of the basin now known as duchesne county in 1912 election elections there were about 1200 voters in 1914 the number increased to about and in 1916 it is reasonable sona ble to estimate the total registered vote at about but as many of the canals are built and the lands producing and as many other canals are nearing completion the slow tedious portion of the simple history since 1905 is we believe about completed pl eted we are on the eve of wonderful progress A new era is dawning we are becoming too big to remain silent our i inland empire must attract capital and citizens the basin has about acres of farming land and water for it this of itself will support a large population but cread what we have to say further I 1 in in this brief outline let us tell you about the commercial center of the basin ROOSEVELT |
