Show ? ) Event At Creek Cycle Cherry RogeraYictorious CALIFORNIAN WINS FOB THIRD TIME Last Sunday, after four and a half hours of treacherous and a full 13 minutes ahead of the desert riding A1 Rogers of Burbank, California, number two finisher swept his 650 c.c. Triumph motorcycle across the finish line of the sixth annual Cherry Creek Motorcycle Hare and Hound. This was Rogers third win at Cherry Creek, which is approximately 30 miles southwest of Eureka, Utah. Sponsored by the Salt Lake Motorcycle Club, the Cherry Creek Hare and Hound is comprised of three loops (20 miles, 30 miles and 50 miles) totaling 100 miles through desert terrain. The Cherry Creek event gained national reputation in 1964 when the Hare and Hound Nationals were held there. According to Ray Curt, president of the Salt Lake Motorcycle Club and chairman of last Sundays event, an extensive amount of effort went into preparing the Cherry Creek run. Members of his club worked for three weeks touring the area, planning the course, and finally, the day before the event, setting up the markers which the riders were to have followed. Members of the Salt Lake Motorcycle Club lad camped at the Cherry Creek site throughout the weekend, , preparing the final layout of the course. a bit of lime here, a piece of The course markers ribbon there were anything but obvious to the riders. Of the 58 motorcyclists who started, only 11 finished tee 100 mile event. Eight riders finished the 100 c.c. Class, which was 80 miles. The 20 mile loop was not run by the smaller machines. Rogers has been riding desert Hare and Hound events for 15 years. He is a veteran of the Big Bear Run and events in California. innumerable other cross-count- ry In an Interview after his win at Cherry Creek, Rogers said that the way to a Hare and Hound victory was "to set a constant speed, not too fast but not tbo slow, and never make a mistake. Mistakes cost time, and time is something you havent got. . The Cherry Creek Hare and Hound event has been a Riders 'Association event since its beginning in 1960. Starting in 1962, the Salt Lake Motorcycle Club presented a 'revolving trophy nearly five feet tail to the winning rider, who kept the trophy until another rider won it. In 1962, Bill Barnes of Salt Lake City won the trophy, only to pass It on the following year to A1 Rogers. In 1964, the year of the Hare and Hound Nationals at Cherry Creek, Mike Patrick of Duarte, California, wen the trophy. Last year, Rogers won the trophy back. Now, having won his third Cherry Creek event, Rogers will keep the trophy permanently. Although the highest proportionate number of participants were from Utah, riders also came from Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and California. While a Hare and Hound is a fairly boring spectator sport, the ' competitors find that this type of event is extremely rough on both the men and the machines. Its been said around Eureka that 'there aint nothing out there but jackrabbits, and damned few of them.... But after Sunday, there are pieces of motorcycles out on that desert to keep those few jackrabbits company. Rogers, Californian championship motorcyclist, receives congratulations Just after winning f the Cherry Creek Hare and Hound. Rogers crossed the finish line nearly a quarter of an hour j sooner than the second place rider, Christie.
