I peeked out the front door to see what all the racket was out there. Wilkinson for his conservative principles and disavowed any alliance with his rival, Representative Sherman Lloyd. The fuss was over a picture in an advertisement showing Lloyd with the GOP presidential hopeful. A caption under the photograph said it did not constitute an endorsement. Apparently, however, the few lines of type didntf appear in early editions of the Deseret Newrs. After four trips I managed to bring them all In and I found that they were all newspapers. One of them was labled Salt Lake Tribune (If youU excuse the expression), another had the title Deseret News (excuse again), another was titled Metro South and my goodness there was the Rocky While Lloyd supjxjrters were calling to correct the error, quickwitted Wilkinson men were phoning Goldwater national headquarters. Forthcoming was the damaging telegram from the presidential hopeful who iad said he would support no primary election candidate. The wire was a rather routine example of the political writers art. . .but in an oblique sort of way it could be interpreted as endorsing Wilkinson. Review Mountain States along with The damage was done. The clock had run out by Tuesday morning and there was no time for Lloyd forces to repair the damage. Did this blunder cost Lloyd the election? We can only say that the Salt Lake County vote did not come up to expectations and failed to overcome heavy Wilkinson support in other counties. School Board Sanctions Next? are grateful as anyone to see teachers i sign new contracts. The crisis has been erased. The thorn in the rosebush still hurts, though, in the form of NEA sanctions. W e The fact that schools will open tends to make us forget the harm sanctions do to our prestige and economy. They will not help the lution. . so- .they simply become a part of the problem. Teachers from other states have enough judgement to If conditions are better than some other states, NEA should allow teachers to make up their own minds. . .without pressure.
