Show OIL & MINING JOURNAL FEBRUARY 9, 1970 Page 5 Nevada mining boom the CARSON CITY Nev. State of Nevada seems to be off on a mining boom rivalling that of the Comstock lode days, according to Mervin Gallagher, state mining inspector. Nevada mines produced .35 per cent more in 1969 than in any year on record. Gallagher pointed out the large amount of exploration that is going on in the state and the fact that Howard Hughes is buying up mining claims as fast as he can. An estimated $172 million has been produced in Nevada mines in 1969, according to the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This was a jump of nearly $46 million over the pervious high of $126 million in 1956. It was also 44 per cent greater than 1968, a year which saw the end of the copper strike, which began in 1967, and held down over-a- ll production during that time. Although the two glamor metals, gold and silver, attract the most attention, copper is still the most important metal mined in Nevada. More than $100 million worth of copper was produced in the state during the year, as against $19 million in gold and $12 million in silver. Boreta stressed that the work completed to date is exploratory arid that the results do not necessarily indicate a commercial discovery. It is expected that the mine will be in production by 1972. The ore at this southern Utah mine lies at 2,400 feet in the Morrison Formation. It has been hailed as the largest discovery in Utah since the heyday of the uranium boom of the 1950s. Rio Algom is going ahead with sinking of a production shaft and ventilation shaft on the strength of contract to deliver 500,000 pounds yearly to a six-yethe Duke Power Company, Charlotte, N.C This is about half of the projected production capacity of the facility. Both shafts are 16 feet in diameter and encased in concrete. The production shaft is below 600 feet; the ventilation shaft to 1600 feet. Eventually the shifts will drop 2,550 feet into the earth. The mine will be manned by Americans when in operation, but two members of Rio Algoms Canadian staff are on site now during development. They are Gordon M Godfrey, general manager, and Robert Sullivan, resident engineer. Layout and operating methodology of the mine is still being worked out. However, basically it will be operated on the room and pillar basis, according to Godfrey. Still undecided is the matter of milling the on a custom basis at Atlas Minerals present mill in Moab 30 miles to the north or at an on-s- ite mill to be constructed. The ore body is an extension of the Alice deposit which is being mined by Homestake Mining Co. to the. west. ar ore-whe- ther SILKED cm STOCKS 0 RANGE 4c TO $40 PER SHARE We specialise in diver, geld and uranium stocks and selective penny mining slocks.
