Show SOME MORE FORECASTS the cannon bill and its probable fate herald says it will be killed and deseret news says friends of prohibition are growing ahe fate of the cannon bill in the s senate enate is still a matter of much speculation in the newspapers published c d at the seat scat of the herald and inter mountain both maintain that the cannon bill is sure to be killed outright and they give an all account of a senate caucus at which 12 out of the 18 members of the senate were present and unanimously decided to kill the cannon bill and P pass a ss a substitute bill in place of it here is the herald aci aunt of the caucus despite predictions to the contrary the day of doom for the cannon prohibition bill is in sight before the convention of the republican pro to be held in the salt lake theatre next wednesday the senate will have killed the bill beyond the hope of resurrection this conclusion was made practically certain by a secret caucus of twelve which was held in the mayors office immediately after the adjournment of the senate the sergent sergeant at arms guarded one door to the room in which the caucus was held and the assistant sergeant at arms guarded the other no one save the members of the senate who had been asked to meet in this room was permitted to enter when the caucus began those present were president gardner senators marks seely miller Hulan tsi kuchler benner X smith Sto bullen hyde sey sevy john Y smith smite and badger shortly after the meeting began senator miller was called out by senator senater wilson and about half an hour before its conclusion senator kuehler kuchler left after the meeting adjourned the senators who were at the meeting were non lion communicative they admitted that the cannon bill and the prohibition question were the subject of discussion that final ard ard definite action concerning the cannon bill was taken aken atthe at the caucus and that the death sentence was pronounced is the accepted belief other bills con conceding concen cering ng the liquor question were considered and tine one of these which it is understood had the greatest support will be introduced before the end of the week eek all of the twelve who were at the caucus during nearly all of the time that the meeting lasted are opposed to the cannon bill though it is understood that not all of them are agreed on the provisions ot of the substitute bill to be introduced the substitute known as the cullen hotel bill drawn by the federal bunch hab bab few advocates the above may or may not be true the herald is against again sit prohibition and anything it can say to create sentiment against the measure it will not hesitate about doing it on the oth other erhand hand the deseret news gives out the following follo optimistic view of the matter the outlook for a state wide prohibition bill in the state senate is considerable better this afternoon than ever before senators are rapidly losing faith in any subs substitute titu ite the substitute chih it i ws hoped would be drawn up as the result of the commercial club ca icus has been abandoned abondo ned by its promoters senator hyde when asked concerning it this afternoon stated that it would probably never be introduced this means that the caucus developed the fact that there are no ten senators to be found who will stand against the prohibition bill ill there is a general tendency in the senate this afternoon after roon to regard the bill as inevitable the fight against prohibition will probably be given up unless something happens pens to change the present mood I 1 with ith the two very opposite views of the legislative fate of the cannon bill it is hard to see what is going to I 1 happen the herald again places I 1 sevy in n the of the opposition I 1 and his friends in his own district gay I 1 that he will vote for the cannon bill |
