share w ith our many friends and readers Salvatore Centile Reprinted from The Xew York By Time Everyone should go to a nursing home People should go not when they are old but while they still know where they are while their eyes perceive shapes clearly not as indistinguishable shapes that disappear in the distance They should go while there is enough strength in their arms to give a firm handshake before it becomes a struggle just to lift a fork to their lips They should go to a nursing home while they are still able to turn on their heels and walk out the same way they came in I do it every week My father has been in the same one for almost two years now — flat on his back mostly They brought him in for reasons I still have trouble pro- nouncing: degenerative heart condition and arteriosclerosis advanced arthritis and a host of other ail- ments Lamanite Generation This is one of the many dances which is per- formed by the Lamanite Generation world- renown performing group district's teacher of the year in Las Vegas w ith He and I have another word for it — old age The years it seems ganged up on him all once The same man who only a year ago started wearing glasses woke up old one morning and was rushed to the hospital He had been progressively slowing down but I overlooked the warnings signs I refused to admit the truth Putting a father in a nursing home was something loving children just did not do I was afraid of taking him to such a place - afraid it represented a betrayal of all he had done for me Those first months when I saw him in his new surroundings that fear seem justified He had a bewildered look on his face and a hospital dressing gown on his back He has had one like it ever since There were tubes leading into his arms And a plastic identification band around his wrist And cheery strangers popping their heads into his room exhorting him to be a "good boy" I was ashamed of w hat I had done to him I wanted to wrap my coat over his shoulders take him back home But then what? Who would stay with him? Who would see to it that he ate and bathed and didn't fall down going from one room to the other? I resented having to entrust my father to outsiders I was angry at old age for having claimed him so fast and for a while I directed my hostility at the very people who were do the most for him Time changed that I always knew that nursing homes provided the constant material care that older people demanded But that is only part of it They provide intangibles I knew nothing about — a barrage of hugs and kisses that help assuage the fear of death For their charges they make the remaining years meaningful In my father's case it is not simply that He is still very much alive and they make sure he knows it They cut his nails and shave him as if he were going out on the town They protect his dignity They have managed to teach me a thing or two as well I don't lie to myself about my father's condition anymore I don't pretend he will be leaving his room someday to resume the way of life he left behind But the days he has left as many of them as there arc needn't be empty I can't do anything to make him younger Or to reattach the leg he lost to poor circulation but I can make the remaining time together rewarding — for both of us I can remind him of all the things he has done to be proud of If he is too sleepy to talk when I visit I bring a magazine or a newspaper and read it out loud The sound of my voice feels good to him So does my hand stroking his forehead We see each other more than ever and draw on each other's strength to deal with what lies now ahead A nursing home once represented a beginning of the end My father and I don't see it that way now Now it's just another place to be together Plant Georgia-Pacifi- c Rates Tops In Safety SIGURD — Georgia-Pacifi- c recordable injury rate Georgia-Pacific- ’s Corp's gypsum plant in Sigurd has tied for the National Gypsum Sigurd plant worked all of 1993 with zero recordable injuries The industry average rale is 539 award for its excellent safely record in 1993 The Peerless Division is the highest safety recognition in the National Gypsum Association's un- Sigurd is one of 18 plants to compete for the National Gypsum Association s safety award Georgia-Pacifi- c is one of the world's largest forest products companies with more than 400 operations across the country and approx- Association's der 172000 Peerless Division work-hou- r category The award is given to plants w ith the best safety performances according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) imately 50000 employees The company is based in Atlanta Ga HATS OFF TO OUR DOCTORS AT SEVIER VALLEY HOSPITAL!
