animals is the biggest reason for Utah’s low deer population That was the opinion of Darys Ekkcr Hanksvillc president of the AsWayne Chapter of the Western sociation of Land Users "Predators arc keeping the deer low and d population at a control to effort little there is yet them" Ekkcr said Ekker echoed the sentiments of WALU members in calling for state managencies involved in game agement to include predator control as part of their management program Ekkcr said that in 1932 while working gold mines in the Henry Mountain areas he and other miners noted that the deer population in w hat he called the best deer range in to an alarm ihe v v!l h il man- near-recor- ing low number With the help of government trappers 52 mountain lions were shot and killed that year and a predator control effort continued until in the early 1940s when the deer population was back up "From 1945 to 1965 the Henry Mountains were producing some of the biggest and best deer in the nation" Ekkcr said "The statements that bad winters arc responsible for low deer numbers isn’t the basic problem" Ekkcr said "It’s just a pure and simple case of predators of which arc part of the overall w ildlife system" Ekkcr said "Until predators arc controlled the deer population will continue to drop" he said Ekker said that despite low deer numbers game licenses sold in Utah far outnumber available game ani- mals "Utah's deer herds could be anniin just a few years unless more and belter control is exercised" he said "The two basic wav s to reverse the low deer trend is hilated for the state to manage predators as well as game animals and to cut down on licenses until the deer herds have a chance to replenish themselves" The WALU has chapters in 14 western states Three Siblings Selected For ’Who’s Who’ Lara
