opening of the summer season it is the Easter weekend which in reality gets people out of the house and into the hills And as with the beginning of the spring summer outdoor season thousands of people are expected to be involved either in hiking picnicking motorcycling four- 's beefing ATV riding camping fishing and a myriad of other activities which warm weather brings It is no secret that the out doors sometimes takes a beating w ith hordes of people who suddenly appear and begin traveling back roads using campsites visiting state and national parks ana national forests or just driving around the hills Both the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management offices in Richfield stated that there are still areas on both of these areas which are to traffic because of snow and mud In most cases gates are closed and locked indicating the areas are off limits this early in the year We hope people will realize that the cates are tnere and are closed for a reason Violation of these regulations result in damage to the public lands and it is eventually the taxpayer w ho pays for restoration off-limi- ts Announcements have already been made that the expected influx of recreationists to the Moab and southeast Utah area has caused concern to law enforcement officials there to the extent that they are not only geared up to handle this crowd but have added features to help control it Traditionally the Little Sahara Recreation area in Juab County attracts thousands of people especially those with ATVs and motorcycles That area too is preparing for additional law enforcement officers to be on hand In one way it is unfortunate that the law has to be beefed up simply because there are a few who refuse to follow common decency in controlling what they do in recreation areas Instead of follow ing the law and state regulations so that the area will continue to be available to all they do as they please resulting in many cases arrests to them and damage to the area Of course with large numbers ofpeople security needs to be increased for the general safety and welfare of everyone Not only will these recreational areas experience a high volume of visitors especially as the season opens but roads highways and interstates will also have larger traffic volumes requiring more caution in driving Spring is a great time to shake off the winter doldrums and be able to get out to enjoy nature It also means that as we exuberantly make the season change the everpresent need for both safety consideration and following rules and regulations becomes even greater "Why didn’t you print the list of mass meeting places?" the nice lady asked me at the front office "Why Sevier County Residents Featured In State Rural-Issue- s Symposium Rcsidcnis and former rcsidcnLs of Sevier County were in the spotlight at the statewide Rural Issues Symposium held Wednesday March 23 at Snow College Charles F "Chuck" Nielsen a native of Monroe who is now a vice president of Texas Instruments w as the keynote speaker His topic was "Crowing Up in Rural Utah: Applying personal experiences to the challenges of tcxlay’s rural youth" Using examples from his early life he based his remarks on the concept that thinking and perception drive behavior He outlined three fundamental ideas that determine whether a company or organization can compete successfully in the marketplace Nielson showed Texas Instruments’ first pocket calculator which didn’t really fit in a pocket very well had a maximum of four functions and cost S254 and compared it with the latest small and simple six function calculator that costs S399 To find a steady market the product had to be improved leading to the first ideas that security requires change Second differences such as race religion gender and diversity of background are valuable because they foster creativity and innovation "Not everyone can be the perfect manager model of a six foot tall male with a receding hairline who comes from Monroe" he joked Nielsen’s third idea about success came from an incident of his teenage years when he was reluctant to thin sugar beets because his were older bigger and stronger His mother insisted "You re every bit as good as they are All you have to do is try" From this he learned that superb results come from supreme efforts He noted that problems are always caused by the same people — they Perfect plans significant improvements and high expectations often are not met or earned out because "they" won’t allow it or say it can’t be done " They’ are every-- w here and nowhere" Nielsen said He used the symposium to start his personal campaign to stamp out "they" passing out lapel buttons with "they" in a red circle with a red line through it we did" "It’s right here in the assured her paper" I ing to be proven wrong My hope said "It's there she just missed seeing it" but my better judgment (and the lump in my stomach) said "It isn't there" As I turned each page buying a few seconds of time until the awful truth would emerge thoughts were racing through my mind The big question was "Why isn't it there and where did it go?" But as I grabbed a paper to prove her wrong I had that sinking feeling accompanied by a definite hard lump which began to grow quickly in the pit of my stomach (why is it your stomach has to take all the flack for your problems?) meticulously set the story on the computer myself I had checked every meeting place with its address with Proofreader Trish and I knew it just had to be in the I had For some reason I knew as I confidently opened the paper and started to flip pages that I was go-- Sevier school board member Ruth Jackson was one of the planning committee for the symposium She is a member of the legislative action committee for the Utah School Boards Association and a member of the three-memb- er T STOP IF advisory board of the Center for Rural Life at Southern Utah Educational Services participated as began aid Red Hills Middle School English and reading teacher Roger Williams sang two songs one a parody he had written at Jackson's request for the symposium Annette Jones a graduate of Cedar Ridge High School and a stu- dent at Sevier Valley Applied Technology Center was on a panel with five other students discussing the pros and cons of education in rural schools KTVX Channel 4 news anchor Randall Carlisle moderated the panel Issues discussed at the symposium which a dozen county residents attended included enhancing rural life with the fine arts economic development families health higher and education serving the whole spectrum of students in rural public schools local interagency councils post-seconda- and technology Resources available through Far West Labs a research organization were also explored As he welcomed the group planning committee member Rick White of Snow College introduced rural issues with statistics from the Central Utah area He said that the household income in the area is 47 percent of the national average Only 13 percent of the residents have bachelors degrees or the equivalent and that just 6 ty percent of the children of the remaining 87 percent go on to earn bachelors decrees Snow College President Gerald Day said the opportunities and advantages for rural America are great "but we need each other- - none of us can go it alone" Attitudes that work against rural Utah such as the zero sum mentality should be recognized and eliminated I have known for some time that am a procrastinator par par excellence Whether it is cleaning the house thank you notes getting my car in to be serviced writing memos at work grocery shopping or writing my column 1 tend to put things off until the last minute As Kraig sprayed the gutters outside there was a down pour in the basement inside Most things have deadlines or time limitations which tend to dictate the absolute final hour in which something can be done The house can get only so dirty before it has to be cleaned went on his merry way I I’m sure Emily Post would say there is a certain time limit in which thank you's are to be written to remain in good stead ithin so If a car is not serviced eventually the many miles transmission will let you know Memos have to be written in a timely manner or they don't get any results or cover one's posterior w If the cupboard is bare it’s time to shop And press time for the paper is Tuesday afternoon so if I don't have my column faxed down to the shop by early Tuesday morning at the latest the presses would run w ithout me Luckily or perhaps unluckily not everything has built in time limitations on the completion dates Take for instance our downstairs bathroom Kraig and I moved into our home back in December of 1985 The weekend we moved in was gorgeous — shirt sleeve weather The only way a plumber could get to the broken pipe was through a fiberglass ceiling in the shower m the basement He cut a lovely hole in the shower fixed the pipe and We had a lovely hole in our shower and ended up having to tear out the ceiling in the rest of the bathroom because of the water "No problem" we damage thought "We’re going to remodel the bathroom anyway" After all it had a lovely avacado green basin antique greenish brown cabinets and wonderful white paneling with green wood stain We soon found out that there were other more pressing projects in our wonderful new house that precluded us from our remodel job Then we just got lazy "We need to get around to doing the basement bathroom" Kraig would say I would agree And it wouldn't get done Oh we'd do other projects just not the basement bathroom Finally and I’m not quite sure why we're attacking the basement bathroom And it’s been an ugly project I understand now why we put it off for as long as we did Kraig had to chip out die tile from the old shower Then the drain was in the wrong place so he had to use a jack hammer to dig it ouL previously-owne- d We finally got the shower in and we built the cabinets the wrong size They were fine if we weren't going to use the door The linen closet was just eight inches too big had frozen earlier in the vear and had proven under tnc nousd The linen cabinet was rebuilt and the vanity was ready to go into place The space for the linen closet and vanity was 92 inches The li Kraig hooked up the garden hose to spray out the gutters As is the case with many homes they can be full of surprises for the new owners And ours was no exception The outside water pipe t "WlN (That's the pessimistic outlook) But knowing that it had been set and it had been proofread and it just wasn’t there bugged me to no end While the nice lady (and she really was nice) waited for an explanation I rushed to the composing room and feverishly began looking on cardboard galleys hoping to find it At least I would have known that somebody goofed by just plain leaving it out just wasn't there Technology specialist James Christensen of Central Utah a discussion leader in the resource session on technology Richfield High School’s bluegrass band provided music before the conference Now it isn’t the end of the world when we miss getting a story in Looking at another side we could have run it and printed it wrong But this too was to no avail It BY IAN University paper But after turning the last page without spotting the story I could only confirm what the nice lady had informed me moments before: it wasn't there MRS nens closet and the vanity were 92 inches Unfortunately we didn’t allow for the fact that the floor isn't level and the walls aren't straight Instead of being able to slide the cabinets right into place Kraig and I spent the better part of the week end trying to shoe hom the cabinets into place Talk about trying to fit 10 pounds of potatoes in a five pound bag!!!! We're still not finished There's still some plumbing to be done the sink needs to be installed the walls need to be painted and the ceiling tiles need to be hung But at least we're started We're well on our way to being finished! And it only took us eight and a half years to get to it! Just call us a pair of primo procrastination partners! RHS Will Close At Noon Today Richfield High School students will be excused at noon Wednesday (today) to allow accommodation of the region drama meet RHS will host the evenL School is also out Thursday and Friday for spring break RHS freshman orientation will be Monday and Tuesday April 4 and 5 in the high school auditorium from 6 to 7 pm Principal Teresa Robinson and counselor Bert Christensen will explain student educational plans with students and their parents This year's freshman student body officers will entertain questions about high school life Students and parents will sign up for scheduling times with TAS advisors for Wednesday and Thursday April 6 and 7 I called the story up to the screen on my computer There it was I quickly ran out a copy and took it to the nice lady who was still wondering why the story didn't run I explained that the information she brought in had been processed and the story had been written and here's the proof She had that "So what?" look on her face And while she was kind enough not to jump all over me (as some irate people do) she almost apologized herself saying that she hoped that what she brought in hadn't had a bunch of flaws which prevented it from being printed I continually assured her it was not her fault as I also continually tried to figure out where the story went It has been a long time since an incident of this nature has bugged me so much After personally taking the blame I was assured by Publisher Mark that computers do strange things Maybe it never got run out I knew that it had because I made corrections on the first run through Maybe it got stuck on the back of a galley with another story No we checked all that Maybe the computer ate it I liked that possibility better than any of the others As of this writing I still don't know where the story is or how it got wherever it is if it's anyplace at all And to Kent Colby who said that they had had a lot of calls at the radio station wanting to know where some of the meeting places were because they weren't in The Reaper we can only say the radio was second choice for their information As to his chiding us on the air with his "Maybe The Reaper thought the story was too boring" I can wily say that the computer apparently didn't think so It really did a number on it And computers don’t eat boring stories F |
