Show ft SPRING PASTURE IS NOT HARMFUL north carolina F finds milk Is richer in butterfat its mostly tradition and riot nut facts that leads many dairymen to b elleve believe that tho tha quality of milk depreciates when tile cows are turned from froin the dry fee feed d of the stable to tile the succulent green feed of the pasture yet we have a few dairymen and many consumers who believe this says ed d at haig of the animal husbandry department at tile the north carolina state college we have just completed n R test with nine cows in the herd here at the college shows that instead of the animals int mals giving a lower quality of milk in tho the spring it Is materially richer in butterfat 11 last winter professor balg selected nine cows and fed them cottonseed lulls hulls ns as the sole roughage for a period of ten weeks no succulent feed was given during the period the average dally daily milk production was 2010 pounds testing 40 1 per cent fat the cows were then changed from tile the hulls to corn and liny hay and after giving time to accustom themselves to the change the same data was again collected with this feed each cow cov of the nine produced 2091 2001 pounds of milk per day testing 3 per cent faton may 4 the nine cown were turned on a rich pasture consisting of green wheat and crimson clover q again they were allowed tinie time to adjust themselves and the data again collected the average dally daily production in tills this case was 2129 pounds of milk each day testing 5 X per cent fat throughout each of these three tests the grain ration remained constant and sup supplied a bri balanced lanced ration however this shows that sila silage ge Is better than the dry fpud and a good pasture Is better better th than in silage professor states that succulent feed Is important in the dairy business not only for the maintenance of healthy cows but also for tile the amount and quality of milk produced |
