The size of the building required will depend largely on the number of fowls to he kept and on the size ef the flocks. From 25 to 100 seems to be about as many as is safe and economical to keep together. With flocks of this size, about four square feet of floor space should be allotted to each bird, which will suffice In most cases where careful attention Is given to cleanliness and ventilation. Three to three and square feet is enough for Leghorns In large flocks. If the fowls are kept in smaller flocks a little more floor space per bird will be needed. Where the climate Is so mild that It Is unnecessary to keep the fowls confined, except for a few days at a time, and especially If the fowls are kept In small colony houses, less space per bird will be sufficient. The smaller breeds, being more active and restless, require about as much room one-ha- lf Capt. George K. Shuler has originated a plan by which marines stationed In all parts of the world may be educated. It was the formulation of a correspondence school, the plan providing- that all papers be sent into the marine headquarters, where they are marked, graded and returned to the students. Photo shows Captain Shuler inspecting a paper that has been marked 100 per cent. EDUCATION FOR TIME TO DOCTOR FOWL The time to doctor a fowl .Is before it gets sick, and the way to do this is to keep it free from lice, feed judiciously, keep the quarters clean .and well ventilated, supply good, clean water and plenty of sharp grit or gravel; avoid drafts and use only the most vigorous and healthy birds In the breeding pens. FISHERMEN Course Upon Catching and Transportation of Sea Food to New Be Given. Cambridge, . Mass. Fish and their habits, the methods of gathering them from the sea and the latest methods of transporting sea food, are the subjects of a new course In fisheries offered by Massachusetts Institute of Technology here, at the request of the big fishing companies, which feel the need of trained experts In directing the Industry. Refrigeration problems, by which It Is hoped to make fish available to every comer of- the country, regardless of distance, will be one of the problems confronting the students in the new course. During the summer months the students probably will spend several months on a government vessel on tbe fishing banks. - ENGLISH SHIP MARKET POOR Nearly Completed at Sunderland Sold at Less than Half Vessel Cost. ' as' the larger breeds. FOWLS FOR EGG PRODUCTION Hens May Return Profit, but Younger Ones Will Give More Pullets Preferred. Old Some folks have the right kind of fowls, house and feed them properly, and still dont get eggs early , in the winter because their hens are too old. It seldom pays to keep hens for laying after they are two and one-hayears old. They may give a profit, but younger fowls will give more. Many poultrymen who make a spelf cialty of winter-eg- g production keep the only pullets, disposing of even yearling liens, before It Is time to put them In winter quarters. Early hatched pullets, If - properly grown, ought to begin laying In October or early November, and continue to lay right through the winter. Yearling' hens seldom begin laying much before January 1, and older hens not until later. It Is the November and December eggs that bring the high prices. The laylbg breeds should begin laying when from five to six months old, general-purpos- e breeds at r!x to seven, and the meat breeds at seven or eight months. Glasgow, Scotland. The market for shipbuilding is so poor that no new order to build a ship has been received at Wallsend on the Tyne since the beginning of the year, says Sir George Burton Hunter,, chairman of the board of directors of one of the big shipbuilding companies there. A vessel now nearly completed at Sunderland has been sold at a price BUYING OF PULLETS IN FALL less than one-haits cost of construction. Sir George gives figures showing Practice Is Preferable to Hatching that It now costs 11.73 for a ton of steel Chicks in Spring on Account of used In a ship, as compared to 3.58 In Small 8pace. . . . lf 1911. . . Your Tip to the Thief. In a crowd the thief will often raise a cry of watch out for pickpockets, and immediately everyone will raise his hand to the pocket In which he carries hls money. The thief watch, es closely and thereupon, Is informed just where you carry your wealth. The hip pocket Is said to be the most unsafe place for valuables as It Is the most easily reached by the thief. The buying of pullets In the fall Is preferable In most cases to buying day-ol- d chicks or to hatching chicks In the spring, says the United States Department of Agriculture. Usually little space is available for raising chicks, and, moreover, few city dwellers have had experience 'gpough to warrant the undertaking. Hatching and raising chicks requires broody hens, or the buying of incubators and brooders, and snch an Investment Is too large for the average small flock. |
