Business lives at NLTH LAYTON North Layton Junior High Schools ninth grade home economics students know more about the U.S. free enterprise system because of a study unit they have just completed. The students have been studying about small businesses. After the concepts were well established, the young people had some practic al business experience. Students were organized into companies with four or five in each business. They went through the usual steps required for starting a business. This included purchasing a license, making a product to sell, marketing the product through advertising and selling the product. The businesses all sold food pro LHS coed chosen LAYTON Layton High senior Teri Burdett was selected recently out of five applicants from area high schools to attend a Youth Leaders Conference, April 25-2- 9, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. The Youth Leaders Conference is built around a series of carefully sequenced program activities that ducts such as slush, cookies, suckers and popcorn balls. The sales took place during the three lunch periods for two days. At the conclusion, the businesses had to prepare financial statements evaluating where their company stood regarding profit and loss. All student companies made money even after taxes were paid. It was a perfect day to let a balloon float off into the horizon, Wednesday, for first graders at Kaysvilles Columbia Elementary School. Some 150 participated with messages enclosed seeking responses. Who knows from whence a reply might come? Syracuse honor roll listed build on preconference activities and provide hands-o- n experiential learning opportunities. Conference activities focus on leadership development, community problem awaresolving, and cross-cultural ness. Topping the list of invited guests was Mrs. Ronald Reagan. Mrs. Reagan was asked to talk about drug abuse and what individuals can do to make a difference in the lives of others. Other speakers included Carrie Rozelle, founder and president of Foundation for Children with Learning Disabilities. After the conference Teri will be irt"Vd!VBrflocany with high school students to enhance volunteerism for United Way. After high school graduation this spring, Teri plans on attending We- ber State College to pursue a degree in nursing. She is the daughter of Larry G. and Sandy Burdett of Layton. SYRACUSE Academic honors were awarded to outsanding students at Syracuse Junior High School recently. Seventh, eighth and ninth grade students were inducted into the Syracuse Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Students were selected and invited to participate because of their administrator and teacher. The advisors of the Syracuse Chapter are John Willerton, Ann exceptional academic achievements and outstanding citizenship in and out of school. In order to be inducted into the society members must possess an overall grade point average of 3.75 or better each semester while in junior high school. Many of those inducted achieved a perfect 4.0 average and Hawley, Carl D. Hellewell, Lindie M. Hunting, Anya L. Kenley, all honors in citizenship. Participants and audience heard messages delivered by Tara Dye and Conn Famuliner, current chapter members and musical numbers performed by the choral and instrumental departments of Syracuse Junior High. The featured guest speaker was Onan T. Mecham, retired school Dana M. Hitt, Brittany D. John- son, Brian P. Kelley, B cnda Mathis, Vickie A. McDermott, Paula Montgomery, Marcussen and Howard Adams.
