This year at Sunset Junior High School, the wrestling team contributed the work, and team effort. Their coach, Robert Hillier, provided a special sacrifice, his beautiful beard. At the beginning of the season, Coach Hillier told his team if they won the district championship he would shave his beard off in public. , y s'A'' a?.,' ' T T" ''V--- V ; H t M 1 : ' ; f-'-- , xi m Ar . v.,V- 'V I remember writing about was generic drugs. That was about 10 years ago. At about the same time generic drugs were becoming an issue, supermarkets started coming out with an entire line of generic grocery products. These generic groceries were safe, but in some cases inferior to the brand name products. This may be one reason generic drugs have lost some of their popularity as a consumer issue. Other stumbling blocks were getting doctors to prescribe generics and getting the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce the approval time for new generic drugs. There is a vastly different con& sumer psychology when comparing buying generic drugs versus cut rate paper towels. Fortunately, there are also vastly different regulations overseeing the two types of generics. All drugs are generic in that they have a specific chemical formula. Brand names are used mainly for marketing purposes. It is much easier to remember Dyazide (a brand name diuretic) than its generic name hydrochlor-othiazide-triamterin- e. Diazepan is better known by its brand name AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL duced price. The reason there arent generic equivalents for all drugs is that the companies which first develop new drugs have patent rights. According to Dr. Norleen Ackerman, consumer economist in the Utah State University college of family life, these patent rights allow the company to be the sole seller of that drug. These exclusive rights generally last about 17 years. She says the exclusive rights are granted to help the company gain enough profit to pay for all the research that went into developing the drug. Its not uncommon for eight years of the patent time to be used up before the drug reaches the market. After the patent expires the drug can be produced and sold under a generic name by any company following FDA approval, Ackerman says. Until 1984 however, she says the FDA required generic drugs to go through the same lengthy clinical tests as the original drug although nothing was being changed except the name, shape and color. In 1984 the Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act was passed and greatly reduced the -- time and cost of introducing generic drugs. This reduced the time and testing needed for a generic drug to be approved by the FDA. Ackerman says generic drug manufacturers are now required to show that the drug: contains the same active ingredients is identical in dosage strength has the same dosage form (table, liquid, etc.) has the same route of administration (i.e. mouth or injection) is used for the same illnesses IWerri Tis the season to be jolly!
