Show DECEMBER 8, 1987 L, Custodian makes difference at county elementary school By TOM HARALDSEN CENTERVILLE When the Utah School Employees Association honors an employee of your school, its quite an honor. So imagine how honored Centervilles J.A. Taylor Elementary felt when not one, but two, of its employees were named Outstanding Employees of the Year by the organization. It happened this year when Bob Perez was named Outstanding Custodian and LaRae Broadbent was chosen Outstanding Secretary in the state of Utah. Both nominations came from principal Jean Madsen and the faculty of J.A. Taylor. Mr. Perez is possibly the most popular faculty member at the school, active in all school programs and functions. In her letter of recommendation, Mrs. Madsen said Mr. Perez brings a great deal of joy to the school, students and staff. He creates a warm atmosphere around him wherever he may He was praised for taking pride in his work, keeping the school clean and pleasant to look at. Mr. Perez takes particular pride in the buildings grounds, keeping shrubs trimmed. When the studentbody purchased trees to plant in honor of the Constitutions 200th anniversary last school year, he was turning the shovels of dirt and helping students plant the trees. Faculty members say it isnt uncommon to see him helping students with untied shoes. And he even coaches the schools girls soccer team. When we have spirit day each Friday, Mrs. Madsen wrote, Bob takes charge of the music and the flag while wearing his school shirt. He is truly our school spirit kid. A native of Mexico, Mr. Perez was raised in an orphanage as a child. He became a man who has now raised 10 children. His oldest daughter is now working as an interpreter for the Governor of self-taugh- t, self-educat- Mexico. Mrs. Broadbent was lauded as being more than just the usual efficient secretary. She is a one and only with her talents and expertise, Mrs: Madsen wrote. She was praised as an example of positive influence and sets the tone for the school. She has never been known to raise her voice, complain or become frustrated. Faculty members each praised her for the extra touches she provides in all her work, such as decorating calendars, agendas or e memos. She was also as cheerful, orderly, being praised and committed to her responsibilities. Both winners received a Distinguished Award Plaque and a $25 cash award. Prizes were received during the association's luncheon in early October. inter-offic- J.A. Taylor custodian Robert Perez helps first grader Taylor Hill with a shoelace.
