Show JUNE 2, 1987 L, Constitution stands firm Cyclops Lighter Side By Bryan Gray I This weeks column ranges from the ridiculous to the both come from supposedly veteran educators. First, the ridiculous... A former educated named Samuel Blumenfeld is traveling throughout Utah and encouraging attendees at his seminars to withdraw their children from public schools and teach the kiddies at home. This in itself is not totally ridiculous. No doubt there are some parents with the knowledge, tenacity and a supply of Pepto Bismol to teach Johnny or Susie at the kitchen table. Even if Blumenfeld is wrong, at least he has a right to his opinion. And his opinion like home education has some merit if placed in competent hands. But Blumenfeld doesnt stop at mere encouragement. In his first Utah seminar, he made the ridiculous assertions that little children can be turned into monsters by the education they receive in the public schools and later said that public schools are "a dangerous place for children. First to the monsters. ..Ask any teacher and theyll tell you Kids who get more enjoyment in about a few monsters. pouring glue on the carpet or poking another kid in the eye than in cracking open a book. Sure, monsters exist! But the schools when didnt make them into a monster.. .They were they arrived, probably the offspring of doting parents who looked the other way when the kid splashed syrup on the walls or hit the neighbor boy with a baseball bat. Teachers do not create monsters... But, unfortunately, they have to teach them. And as for public schools being a dangerous place for children, Blumenfeld must visit different classrooms than I do. never a bazooka. Sure, Ive seen tape dispensers loaded--bIve seen drugs and weapons in classrooms... But Ive seen more of them in private homes owned by parents who dont have the nerve to call the police. And you dont remove danger by removing the kid to the home. In fact, one of the most dangerous conditions I know of is having a child full of potential being taught by an illiterate, bigoted or inflexible mother and father. It is like the computer concept: Garbage in. Garbage out. Home education is fine for some. .But, in some hands, it becomes a future hazard to society. Blumenfeld blames much of the public school problem on theorist whom Blumenfeld John Dewey, a nation a of little socialists. Poor aimed at developing says John Dewey. Ive visited many school faculty rooms and never once have I ever heard Deweys name mentioned. And if Dewey was so powerful, why did a conservative Ronald Reagan sweep to election in a national landslide? Blumenfeld then said that Satan is present in public school classrooms but that God is not permitted to attend. Well, I dont know about Satan.. .If there, hes not officially enrolled. And as for God being absent. His lack of attendance is due to righty wingers like Blumenfeld who had made book publishers at the mere mention of religion or any other controversial subject. And now to the sublime... While Blumenfeld was fuming about Lucifer and John Dewey, a quiet professional educator, Dr. Lawrence Cook, was reminiscing about his coming retirement at Clearfield High. Yes, he said, students are less interested than previous generations in education. But unlike Blumenfeld, he didnt blame ghosts. The problem, he said, is television which encourages students to take a passive approach to life and look for entertainment rather than enlightenment. He also noted the divorce rate and lack of family involvement in a childs education. disSchool is probably not even brought up in parent-tee- n cussions at some homes, he said. And thats sad for all of us. In 60 seconds, Lawrence Cook summed up a growing American tragedy. In comparison, it took Blumenfeld one hour to relate science fiction. mini-Jekyl- ls ut gun-sh- r Continued from Paga 1 enacted back when this country had three million inhabitants, was largely agrarian and no one much cared what happened thousands of miles from Europe's shores, the practicing attorney continued. He recounted the operations of government under the Articles of Confederation following the Revolutionary War. The reason why they didnt work was because there was no centralized power of taxation or defense," he told the group meeting at the North Seas restaurant. Some 74 delegates were named to meet in Philadelphia to draft what was originally intended as a revision to those Articles, he recounted. Area center directors were told not to spend time lobbying the Legislature last session but the DAVC board still felt Director Jack Shell should have some input there. Mr. Shell said there would have been no concessions without the input from area centers, referring to input on salary and director appointments, especially. But Board Member Boyd Thur- g. good, long-tim- e Syracuse mayor and HAFB employee said, I dont think this (necessarily) will have a lot of meaning to anyone. I dont expect much change. The DAVC board met with John Covey, Davis state board of education member, several weeks ago. Concern was expressed that local authority would be lost in running specialized programs to meet area needs. The issue has been of concern to DAVC board members and officials for many months. The state board of education took formal action last month implementing some of the proposals. registration set 4-- H Anyone living in Davis County, who would like to register for the 1987 year, must do so by June 12.
