Its the end of a school year and for more educators than usual its the last time those bells will hold any meaning for them, as well. From Supt. Lawrence Welling on down the line many experig teachers and administrators are laying enced, their papers, books and pencils down for good. How can anyone do justice in words or otherwise to the work those have accomplished over lifetimes? What about the teacher who somehow motivated the back-rosleeper to not only crack the books but even delve into that chemistry or literature or geometry? What about the teacher who put arm around the student who had pain in his-heyes and spent even a few minutes proving education can be human in its approach? What about the teacher who praised a student when it was prudent and then gently prodded at other times? I think back fondly to some of my elementary, junior and senior high school teachers and the impact they had and still have on my life. There was my fourth grade teacher--- a Mrs. Heldstab. Now to a woman can seem awfully old. And year old, a a sometimes stern voice and a severe look and youve got one totally petrified student. That was me for much of that year. 1 dreaded going to school many days and hadnt ever thought of wanting to miss the year before. That dread grew into appreciation for her as I was able to stand back and look over the year as a mature fifth grader. Her life was devoted to her students. She took such pains to teach us not only the three Rs but also dance, knitting and sewing to boot. She taught us to stick with it and to use every scrap of paper we had. Maybe thats why I still hate to throw a notebook away without using every page from top to bottom. Then there was the spanking new math teacher named Mr. Webb-soof us called him Gary after he revealed his first name when that wasnt kosher. He put up with me even though I seem to need help nearly every night after school. someone I could He was a lot more than just a teacher-al- so talk to as a struggling adolescent. My love of music was sharpened by the enthusiasm and support of Mr. Bilderback in high school. He had such a big stomach that those vocal exercises really took on vivid meaning through his demonstrations. of hundreds For some reason, he took an interest in ne of students. He took me to a symphony concert to hear the late Richard Tucker--a world famous tenor. He continually encouraged me to use the talents I had and my , only regret now is that I didnt go as far as I now know I couldve ' with more effort. !, Of course, the list for me could go on and on as hopefully it can for any of you. : Yes, there are good teachers and there are bad teachers, good e administrators, bad administrators. There are good and bad in every field as is part of life. And maybe we get sick of hearing about education and how ' more money is needed and that teachers are overworked. r. Maybe there should be more money and maybe teachers are overworked. The miracle is those teachers who can turn their circumstances to the students good as mere dry facts turn into building blocks for a successful life. Davis School District wont be the same without these administrators and teachers stepping down. I was never schooled by - any of them in the traditional sense but have - learned a lot from many of them over the years. I was going to be a teacher and even went through the Future Teachers of America program in high school. I started college intending on pursuing Education with a Big E. ' The world would be a sorrier place without good teachers. I have enough trouble having had the support of good teachers but know itd be a lot tougher had their time and influence not been levied in my behalf. To one and all, teachers and administrators, thanks a whole lot and best regards to a bright, prosperous future! Avoid the problem, call us before you dig. There are miles of telephone cables, as well as gas, electric, and cable TV lines buried all over. A quick call at least 48 hours before you start digging will get someone out to your place, at no charge, to mark the location of underground utility cables. This could help you avoid injury, service disruptions and the possibility of big repair charges for damaged underground utility cables. Check the Customer Guide of your Mountain Bell White Pages Telephone Directory for the Buried Cable Location Service number. Remember, to avoid a big Uh...Oh..., call before you dig.
