' "A cleaner community," "Making the Spanish Fork the cHy beautiful" and "Striving for self, home "and community culture," are common slogans lieard in from the feminine population. The need for crusaders to improve one's surroundings is Just as great today as in pioneer days. Modernlay women are con- stantly seeking to improve conditions where negative problems exist, from sewage disposal where public health is menaced, to beautification of the city park where the Gardeir'Club is fostering rose bushes planted in memory, of our boys who have served in ' the wars. . ; The largest of these organizations is the Federated Women's Clubs headed by the Council comprised of. the presidents of the various clubs. Their theme, "You are the light of the world," exemplifies the deeds of these women. As a project to aid in a cleaner community, the council under the direction of Mrs; Mildred E. Ream, Mrs. Bill A. Nelson and Mrs. Sterling Jones who are council president, secretary and historian respectively, are, with financial support from the clubs, mailing 1800 letters with the cooperation ofj Mayor Ed M. Beck and the Spanish Fork City Council, to encourage public support in the installation of a sewage disposal system., at a cost of $136,000. The Federated Women's Clubs have responded to the call to clean up pollution of irrigation streams. The city has agreed to give i1 " .'full cooperation. . i clubs the Other accomplishments of the couneil and repre300 of are Girl's State, support wxmien, senting approximately aiding ,and financing the Christmas concert, contributingX tov the Veteran's Memorial Home, new band uniforms for the high 'school, a float for the Spanish Fiesta Days, contributing to library- - projects, and to all of the fund drives, selection of a Mother, of the service and sponsoring the Federated Year, aiding with the Night scheduled for Feb. 17. The council's chief objectives are: Peace in the world, youth conservatios and stabilization of the home. At present there are four junior clubs with the remainder 7 holding senior status. They were organized in 1899 and became federated in 1923 for the betterment", of the community and at the same time have enjoyed the association of each other. "jMrs. F. J. Faux is president. The Alpha Thae is the newest club, having been organized four years. Mrs. Clyde Beckstrom is president. The club's creed from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" "This above all to thine own self be true and it must follow as the night the. day, thou canst not then be .false to any man."" Their individual project is clothing forithe ' V. Utah County Drive. The Vestalian Club is a group of young mothers who "welcome., the task that makes you go beyond yourself." Mrs. LeRoy ,WTiite-head Jr. is president. They aid With all council projects. Aglaian Club members have-alqualified in First Aid as, apCrossl Mrs. Dean Jensen instructed the course proved by the-Re- d and Mrs. Angus Hales is president. Their, theme is "Be prepared," and. they are studying the ideals of the American home the' subjects being, child psychology, art, improvement of Janguage arts children's literature and related subjects. - . l xx ev ' 'Out of Town' Club t Tije Beta Thalian Club of Lake Shore; with Mrs. Floyd Evans as president, is the only federated club "but of town." It's purpose is in knowledge; sympathy and helpfulness. The Thalian Club this year is viewing Utah, its purpose being to know of our state and its worth. Their project this, year has been to compile the biographies of Utah stateswomen. Their president, Mrs. Harold Smith, said that this was done by one. of the members and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest E. Kmfdsen, and presented to the City Library. j The .Ladies Literary Club is the second oldest club and supports the council in all its endeavors. Members have enjoyed rich , VI companionship. Mrs. Evelyn Jones is president. The purpose of the Athenae Club is "beliereing that my ,. . . carries with it a responsibility. "Members pledge" to be a slave to nothing but my duty and friend to nothing but its interest; to look forward to better things but never discontented, with the present."- - These ladies sold Christmas: cards to help finance council projects. They have also taken programs and items of therapeutic value to the Utah State Hospital - and the ' State Training School. Mrjs. David W. Thomas is president. . Clothing Project Mrs. Cecil Curtis, president of the Lofian Club, stated, that its purpose is to promote friendship and develop one's" own abilities. The club's individual project is to gather clothing for the State ' Training School. "To build higher ideals and find contentment by living with the simple things we fihd around us, our homes, books, gardens of our own planting, friends worthy of being loved and able to return love ani a simple religion full of trut, hope and love." This beautiful purpose belongs to the women of the'Athenaeum Club who have as their president, Mrs. John Taylor. Along. with theyother projects, they have aided with the Youth Home, made badges for the senior citizens on "Old Folks Day," taken magazines and ' programs to the ' County Infirmary. Mrs. Frank C. Argyle, president, stated that the purpose of the Euphronian Club reads as follows: "I pledge my loyalty: to the Junior Club Wmen, by living each day trying to accomplish, not merely to exist. By being prompt, honest and courteous." Mrs. Morris Creer outlined the creed of the Self Culture Club: "We believe in and strive for s.elf, home and community culture. No aim is too high, no work too hard for Self Culture." The Beta Thalign Club, with Mrs. Sterling Jones as president, .." has as its objective to promote the highest development of "its members through any avenues of study and, activity that may seem profitable. For the past eight years their individual project has been to gather clothing for the State Training School. One of the most recent organizations is the Spanish Fork Branch of the American Association of University Women with a membership of 63. Their" project this year is the freetime reading of youth. A committee composed of Mrs. Blair Sargent, Mrs. David B. Bowen, Mrs. Eleanor Matley Allen and Mrs. Rulon H. Nelson is conducting a survey throughout Nebo School District to determine! the extent of the. reading of comic books and the ways and means of promoting the reading of good literature, Mrs. Preston G. Hughes .is! president. Mrs. David B. Bowen heads the. Spanish Fork Chapter of the Yesharah, the lady missionary group. TJieir theme is "to seek diligently.1 and teach one another words of wisdom. Seek ye" out of the best books words of wisdom. Seek learning "even by study and also by faith."
