This great line is a stupendous project. It cannot be stated just when the idea originated, or where. The scheme in its entirety involves large figures and heavy costs, the total length of the line being 10,-11- 6 miles, which is not so very far short of the combined length of the three shortest of our transcontinental It should be understood systems. that the enterprise does not, and never did, contemplate the building of an entirely new system of that length; for much of the route is made up of already existing stretches of national railroads. Taking New York as a starting point, the line runs to the Mexican frontier, and from thence though United StatesTi res a re Good "Tires ANNOUNCEMENT There was a shortage of Royal Cord Clincher Tires last year. Even today it Is possible to travel by railroad from New York to the frontier of Guatemala; but from Guatemala to the Canal Zone over half of the line has yet to be built. The longest stretch of uncompleted line is from the Canal Zone to the boundary line between Peru and Bolivia, where, out of a total of 3,362 miles, only 5 4 2 miles have been completed. Also there is a stretch of 127 miles in Bolivia on which work has recently been commenced. The line from Bolivia to Buenos Aires, a distance of 1,060 miles, has been completed. To date 6,500 miles out of a total of 10,116 have been built. Western Newspaper Lmun TERPHILIP OF POKANOKET, ROR OF NEW ENGLAND apologist for the SHOULD the to justify the red mans cruelty by citing cases of white barbarity, he need only refer to the case of King Philip of Pokanoket, chief of the Wampanoags. When he was killed the colonists treated his body as though it were the carcass of a wild beast. They beheaded and quartered him. They exhibited the head on a gibbet at Plymouth for 20 years and they nailed the quarters ou trees. One of his hands, mutilated by a bursting pistol, was given to Alderman, his slayer. King Philip (Meta comet) was the second son of friendly old Massasoit but he had no love for the white men. He saw that unless their expansion was stopped bis own racq was doomed. So he began uniting the tribes of New England against them. The colonists suspected that he was preparing for war but he succeeded in deceiving them until June, 1G75, when his warriors, contrary to his orders, attacked Swansea, Mass. Concealment being no longer possible, Philip plunged into the conflict with savage fury. The next tlne months his warriors and their allies, the Narragansetts, destroyed 12 of the 90 towns in New England. Terror of New England The reached the peak of Ills career at the Battle of Bloody Brook near Deerfield where he killed 90 colonists. After that the star of the Wampanoag began to wane. My heart breaks now. I am ready to die, said the great chief. By now he, with only a few faithful followers, was fleeing from place to place like a hunted wild animal. One of his warriors suggested surrender and Philip instantly killed him with one blow of his tomahawk. Alderman, the slain warrior's brother, immediately deserted to the English and offered to lead Captain Church to Philips hiding place. I shall die before my heart is soft or 1 have said anything unworthy of myself. Canonchet had good reason to hate the English. They had taken his father prisoner and turned him over to his enemies, the Mohegans, who had tortured Miantonoino to death. When King Philip formed his confederation of New England tribes against the whites, Canonchet was sympathetic to the Wampanoags cause, but he did not take the field immediately. The colonists suspected him, however, and demanded that he sign a treaty agreeing to give up to them any of King Philips people who fled to him. Deliver the Indians of Philip? Nfver! was the chiefs indignant reply. "Not a Wampanoag will I ever give up no, not the paring of a Wampanoags nail So the colonists sent an army against Canonchet and on December 19, 1G75, it struck the Narragansetts in their fortified town of Sunke-SquaR. I. There Canonchet lost a third of his nation, but with the remainder, he carried the war to the colonists with such fury that his name was second only to that of King Philip as a word of terror in New England. Finally in April 1676, he was captured. The English offered him his life if he would help them against the hostile Indians, a proposal which was met with haughty silence and an Indignant flash in his eyes. Next they offered to spare him if he would send orders to his people to make peace.
