II ill, of New York, was elected to the United States senata over Evarts, the Republican nominee by a vote of 81 to 79. The office of governor is now vacant. Let everrne do all in their power to see that the house is full that night. The street railway is now putting in its licks hauling ice from the lake. The first carload reached town yesterday. yester-day. In order to make the loading easy, the track of the railway has been j extended into the lake. "There is somewhere in the neighborhood of five I hundred toijs to be hauled, the Asylum Asy-lum and the It. G. W. and U. P. being among these receiving the frozen article. A similar amount is being put up in the immense ice house of Jos. T. Thompson. About twenty hands are employed in the saving of the ice. The office of police, justice of the Fifth pre.cinot of Salt Lake city has been declared vacant by Secretary Sells, because of the failure on the part tf Laney to qualify before him, as the law directs. Laney is nr.w jn California on a vacation, and it is said there are somewhere near half a dozen applicants for his shoes, among them W. W. Gee, who was elected justice of the peace of the Fifth precinct in J February last. It was generally supposed sup-posed at the time that Gee would mount the bench made vacant by the retirement of Jnd-e Pypcr, but Laney slipped in ahead of him It now looks as though Gee's turn had arrived, for while Laney is absent. Gee has made a bid for the position. lb ra Id. Thekk is a tough crowd at P. V. Junction, and the officers are having quite an unpleasant time with them. Sheriff Fowler has just returned from there, and says that one of the gang i got in the toils last Sunday and was lorked up on a charge of drunkenness. While he was being taken to the caboose two of his whisky-soaked chums tried to effect his release from the constable. They were baffled in thir attempts, however, and left. About midnight they surrounded the jail and made an effort to get the bird out of the cage. Instead of doing this, however, they got locked in themselves. When they appeared before Judge Smith the next morning he dissected them well, and after giving them a good tongue lashing, made them contribute con-tribute to the poor and indigent fund of the county to the tun ef $75.00. Their employer, Mr. Southwcrth, paid their fines. |
