The business men of this city, irrespective of former party affiliations, held amass meeting at the theatre to-niglit, to decide as to what line of political action would be best to advance the interests and welfare wel-fare of this city and territory. The attendance at-tendance was enormous, the house being be-ing crowded to the doors. William Baldwin, editor of the Times, the organ of the Republicans, called the meeting to order and Governor West was elected chairman. On the stage were most of the prominent Gentiie and M irmon business men in the city, and after ringing speeches by President Lett of the Ileal Estate Exchange, James .Sharp. Republican, E. B. Critch-low, Critch-low, J. L. Rawlins, and other well-known well-known business men. resolutions were submitted, setting forth that it was being be-ing misrepresented t:iat the political politi-cal conditions exiting here at present were such as threatened the prosperity and advancement of the city and territory; that there was ngiouii.i for these representations, and that a division on national parly lines would secure the advancement of t e territory terri-tory and the whole people, aud that contrary reports emanattd from wholly untrustw orty sources, and should be discredited abroad as they are at home. The resolutions were adopted with just one deeming vote. The school board met to-night ami the annual reports of Pre-ident Scott and various oth r oifii-ers and committees commit-tees were adopted. At the next meeting meet-ing the new school board will be organized. organ-ized. The school ytar closi-s with a deficit of over $2(,000. A 'daring robbery occured in the Ec lipse biiildmg on l irst .South street at o'clock this evening. Mr. Cracken, who has one floor, retired to bed at the hour named and shortly after his wife entered. As she did so. a man sprung at her, knocked her down, and escaied. Chicago, July 10.-The Methodist Endeavors here met at the close of the afternoon session and adopted a memorial memo-rial to the general conference asking the Christian endeavor societies to be allowed a right of way equally with any other young people's societies of church. Terrific Wind Storm. NoRTHFiELD,Minn.. July 10. A terrific ter-rific wind storm about noon to-day played havoc with bill toards, signs, fences and out buildings. Thous nds of apples were shaken from the trees and the loss is considerable. A Suoplcioun Suicide Waterloo, la., July 10. An unknown un-known man, about 65 years old, suicided sui-cided at the leading hotel here this morning by shooting himself and taking laudanum. He registered as "T. ll-liams, ll-liams, Minnesota." On his person was found $55 and memoranda of a check from the State bank of California, payable pay-able to E. A. Dibley, also an express order to Alice M. "Richardson, Des Moines, Iowa, and a bill of lading, consigning a trunk to F. A. Richardson, Richard-son, Cannon Falls, Minn. The dead man used efforts to conceal his identity erasing his name from his clothing, 1 etc, " |
