Show LAID IN ASHES. The Fate of a Cincinnati Eight Story IJuilding. Over a Quarter of a Million Dollars of Furs and Sealskins Consumed. Cincinnati, July S. Shortly after 10 o'clock to-night a fire broke out in the sub-baseineut of the immense building at Fourth and Elm streets, owned by William Hooper, the banker, and occupied by A. E. Burkhaidt & Co., manufacturers and dealers in furs. The building had a seventy-live-foot frontage on Fourth street and extended 150 feet back, The front is seven stories high, and at the rear has a height of eight and a half stories. It also extends two stor.es under un-der ground. It is nearly new, and is valued at about $300,000. Mr. Burkhardt to-night could only give a rough estimate of the value of the slock 111 tne building. It was, in his opinion, between 4000,000 and 6700,000, 111 addition addi-tion to his own immense stock. The lobs is covered by insurance. The Elm street w.ill fell at ahout midnight, and half an hour later the Fourth strejt wall fell on the roof of the Pope Manufacturing Manufac-turing Co.'s three story brick building east of it. The fine stock of paintings, engravings, frames and mouldings was complete! ruined, and the walls of the building were crushed out into the street. The wall in falling knocked in the west wall of the Steinway piano building next to the Pope building. By a great effort the lire was kept from communicating communi-cating to the crushed buildings, and at 1 :30 o'clock it is thought to be under control, The Insurgents About Gone. Callao, July 8. Passengers arriving from Val paraiso and Iquique state the situation of the Chilian insurgents is desperate. They are without money and their vessels are in bad condition aijd without ammun tion. They have been able to obtain only 800 ri'iles, in bud order, bought in Panama, Most of the inhabitants of Iquique, Pisagua and Antofagasta have emigrated to Southern South-ern Chili or to Peru. Bloody Battles on the Congo. London, July 8. Advices received here from the Congo Free State, announce an-nounce a series of bloody battles fought on the Upper Congo and Cruwimi rivers riv-ers in Jinuary and February last, between be-tween the state troops and the Arab save traders.
