The Lobos had played 10 consecutive halves shooting over 50 percent and lead the WAC in field goal shooting. In a critical second half, BYU nursed leads ranging from one to 10 points and committed only one turnover (total of nine for the game) and that was an offensive shove by Schreiner on Vladimir McCrary. The game was tied four times in the first half. After the Cougars broke away from a 7 tie, they never trailed again. Thanks to the big bombs by BYU's guards, BYU's 48 points was the most in a half all year. "We did a good job defensively inside," said Bliss. "But then BYU's guards confidently and with great poise, hit those three pointers. That is the sign of a very good basketball team. "BYU's strategy to take what we gave them was smart. The veterans on BYU's team are leading them to wins. They have guys who know how to play basketball. I think Shawn Bradley is a terrific player. But I look at them and it doesn't matter if he's in there or not. This is a much better team than the one that beat us in Provo. "It doesn't seem to matter who they play. Ken Roberts is a very good player, very physical. They bring in Jared Miller and he had some key rebounds that hurt us. Gary Trost comes off the bench, and he could start for most teams in this league. And then they didn't even use Jeff Campbell and he is 48 27-2- an outstanding player. Their guards handled the pressure and the ball very effectively in front of our crowd." Reid said he left Bradley out of the game after he picked up his third foul just under seven minutes into the first half because of Trost. "Gary is more physical than Shawn is. He came in and was able to guard Longley more effectively. Longley was just moving Shawn out in close and getting easy baskets. I didn't plan on keeping Shawn out in the second half until Gary proved that he was not going to be denied on the night, scoring 12 points in the second half and frustrating Longley. I'm a coach who goes a lot by the way things feel. That felt right to me." Schreiner praised the play of Trost. "When you have a guy come in like that, you don't worry about losing Shawn. Gary has been playing outstanding basketball. You can't say enough about the job Gary did tonight. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't have won. That is taking nothing away from Shawn. But it proves we are a team and you can't just worry about one or two guys when you play us." The Cougars have now swept San Diego State, UTEP, New Mexico and UTEP. Trost said he was amazed at halftime when he learned that Longley had 25 points and BYU still led. "I was supposed to go out and take it right to him, force him to play defense. He's a great player." And so he is. Trost, shooting over 70 percent the past five games, may be the best player in the league. mmute-per-niinu- & COUGAR CABLE present Utah County High School XT BASKETBALL Rebroadcasl U.EBICU FOEX n. TlMPniH Nuggets are victims of Miami's point explosion By The Associated Press a secuii. Isnt Denver the team that's supposed to be scoring all those points? The Nuggets, who earlier in the season made a habit of piling up points (even though they usually lost), were the victims of an offensive show Thursday night as they 2 were routed by Miami. "They score a lot of points and give up a lot. We took advantage of our open opportunities," Miami coach Ron Rothstein said. It was a franchise-recor- d scoring binge for the Heat, who on Tuesday scored their season low in a 94-loss to Cleveland. "It's always great for a young team team like us to be able to blow a team out," center Rony Seihaly said.
