I recently cut a letter to the editor out of the Feb. 9 Daily Herald taking us to task for missing' a portion of the news about a high school indoor track meet. from the The writer says sound of things, you had a reporter waiting in a Provo parks ing lot for the return of and then track stars you got an interview with the timpview public relations person." TV assessment is not quite accurate, but close. High school index)'1 track isn't exactly a big ded. except to the participants. Therefore, reporters aren't assigned to cover the meets Instead, the coaches are asked to keep us informed of noteworthy accomplishments. To date, at least in the indoor track realm, only Timpview's c ach has seen - Timp-,-iew'- high-intere- provided, then to find out what they'll use tit's pointless for a parent to spend two hours writing four pages of information if the newspaper will only use two paragraphs i. make sure you know how they want it. ask about styles, formats, etc and then stick to them. For some reason, people seem to think newspapers and the electronic media magically come up with the information they print. The major stories come from the ,wire services and the reporters covering the various beats. But the other things, while certainly of interest to someone or another of the readers or listeners, come from representatives of special interest groups Parents can ensure their children earning deserved recognition by letting their coaches know that it is their responsibility to publicize as well as coach. And the coaches can fulfill that responsibility by asking for help 204 214 205 205 it wouldn't do for every parent to call to make sure little Johnny got his due. but there's no reason each should not make his needs known to the coach involved and then be willing to help in whatever way possible. And. in the case of such things as indoor track meets, there's no reason why the parents of athletes from Team A can't go to the coach from Team B with the results and ask him to add them to the information he'll be turning in. Obviously We're all willing to blame someone else for one failure or another. How many of us are to shoulder some of the responsibility? wi-in- g Mike McCullough Hod Curl Andv Bean Pat Mctidwan Lee Trevino Bruce Lietzke John Mahaffey (ieorge Archer Jav Haas J C. Over the past year I've been playing with the idea of writing a book on public relations for coaches. It's been my experience that coaches want to coach and leave the publicizing of their programs to someone else. Thai sort of thing works only in those activities, such as football and basketball, that even the casual reader demands to know about. The other coaches must be their own "flaks' as public relations men are known to media people. Parents and booster groups can help the coaches by becoming aware of specific needs within each program. The best way to get any information into any media outlet is first to find out whether that outlet will use it if 67 y East Diehl Simpson Aokl Tom Watson Ben Crenshaw Bill Kratzert 45 72 Allegheny 91 Carnegie-MelloAlvernia 74 Penn St Capitol 68 American 71.
